As of 5PM today, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is reporting 87 newly reported confirmed deaths (11 less than yesterday - down 11.2%) for a total of 14,241 deaths, 3,957 newly reported confirmed cases (1,176 more than yesterday - up 42.3%) for a total of 495,599 cases, and 143,342 newly reported molecular tests (57,145 more than yesterday - up 66.3%). The seven day average positivity rate is 3.89%, compared to 4.28% yesterday. Excluding higher education, the seven day average positivity rate is 5.70%, compared to 6.19% yesterday. The number of estimated active cases was 72,965 (1,630 less than yesterday - down 2.2%). The state also reported zero newly reported probable deaths (same as yesterday) for a total of 290 and 151 newly reported probable cases (186 less than yesterday - down 55.2%) for a total of 25,761. Combining the confirmed and probable numbers gives 87 new deaths for a total of 14,531 and 4,108 new cases for a total of 521,360. There were 1,739 COVID-19 patients in hospital (50 less than yesterday - down 2.8%), 393 COVID-19 patients in ICUs (19 less than yesterday - down 4.6%) and 239 COVID-19 patients on ventilators (intubated) (9 less than yesterday - down 3.6%).
Of the four overview trends (formerly the Page 2 "key metrics"), the 7-day average of newly confirmed cases is 2,414.0 (3 more than yesterday - up 0.1%), 1,437% above the lowest observed value of 157.0 on 7/4/2020 and 62.0% below the highest observed value of 6,242.0 on 1/8/2021. The 7-day weighted average of positive molecular test rate is 3.89% (0 less than yesterday - down 9.0%), 405% above the lowest observed value of 0.8% on 9/21/2020 and 86% below the highest observed value of 27.7% on 4/15/2020. The 7-day average number of COVID-19 patients in hospital is 1,905.0 (45 less than yesterday - down 2.3%), 1,129% above the lowest observed value of 155.0 on 8/26/2020 and 51% below the highest observed value of 3,874.0 on 4/27/2020. The 7-day average number of COVID-19 deaths is 60.0 (3 more than yesterday - up 5.3%), 445% above the lowest observed value of 11.0 on 9/9/2020 and 66% below the highest observed value of 175.0 on 4/24/2020.
Statewide, hospitals reported 9,206 non-ICU beds, of which 6,534 (71.0%) were occupied by non-COVID patients, 1,346 (14.6%) were occupied by COVID patients, and 1,326 (14.4%) remained available. Hospitals also reported 1,493 ICU beds, of which 779 (52.2%) were occupied by non-COVID patients, 393 (26.3%) were occupied by COVID patients, and 321 (21.5%) remained available. By comparison, hospitals reported yesterday a total of 9,223 non-ICU beds, of which 6,594 (71.5%) were occupied by non-COVID patients, 1,377 (15%) were occupied by COVID patients, and 1,252 (13.6%) remained available. Hospitals also reported yesterday a total of 1,483 ICU beds, of which 775 (52.3%) were occupied by non-COVID patients, 412 (27.8%) were occupied by COVID patients, and 296 (20.0%) remained available.
Two weeks ago, the 7 day confirmed case average was 3,570.0, the 7 day confirmed deaths average was 66.0, the 7 day hospitalization average was 2,222.0, and the 7 day weighted average positivity rate was 6.15% (or 7.40% excluding higher education).

As noted yesterday, today's numbers include almost 24,800 lab results that should have been part of the Friday numbers, but didn't make it into that day's report due to a technical issue. Thus, the big jump in newly reported cases isn't as concerning as it otherwise might be. Seeing the reported seven day average positivity rate drop below four percent for the first time since November 30, 2020 (when the state reported a 3.93% rate) is really encouraging. Mind, we've still got way too many new cases every day, and the vaccination rollout continues to be a hot mess, but the trends are looking a lot better than a few weeks ago.
The town of Acton's current Google Data Studio dashboard is showing 52 active and 676 cumulative cases as of January 28, and apparently has not been updated since. The most recent "newsflash style update" at 1:30PM on January 25, 2021 reported 655 cumulative cases with 49 individuals in isolation, 575 persons recovered and 31 fatalities.
