Yesterday, Elon Musk (Chief Narcissism Officer at Twitter) decided that nobody should be allowed to link (or otherwise refer) to Facebook, Instagram, or any Mastodon instance. Today, he's backed away from that decision.
bloody details )

That kerfluffle was the impetus for my first ever sticky post; I figure it's worth memorializing here, before he comes up with yet another unhinged idea.

I used to be active on LiveJournal, way back in the day, but I stopped posting there back in 2017, after the Russian owners decided to change the Terms of Service in ways I found objectionable.

(The Twitter Rules haven't gotten that bad. Yet.)
(Edited 7/24/2023 to include Bluesky; also to demote Twitter, which Elon Musk has decided to rebrand as "X" for reasons of colossal ego.)

Sigh. Twitter (for which read Elon Musk) has changed its policy on COVID-19 misinformation: now, they don't care:
Effective November 23, 2022, Twitter is no longer enforcing the COVID-19 misleading information policy.

The pre-Musk policy (as archived on the Wayback Machine) stated flat out
You may not use Twitter's services to share false or misleading information about COVID-19 which may lead to harm.
Trying to go to the "current" version (https://help.twitter.com/en/rules-and-policies/medical-misinformation-policy) is, at this moment, using an HTTP 302 return status to redirect you to the Twitter Help main page; in my case https://help.twitter.com/en .

I'm still on Twitter, as it hasn't died yet for me. But this isn't good for anyone (except perhaps Musk's groupies).

Give ultimatums to your employees? What could possibly go wrong? )

Hopefully the birdsite doesn't completely die over the next few days. Meanwhile, I'm trying to come up with a good filk, to the tune of Paper Lace's "The Night Chicago Died".

Still trying to understand the world of Mastodon. But I now have an account on the Wandering Shop, which is a much more SF/F focused Mastodon instance than the one I first joined, all of what, four days ago?

The magic string, this time: @edschweppe@wandering.shop

I am still trying to figure out this whole Mastodon thing, as Elon Musk is apparently bound and determined to wreck Twitter for reasons of ego, and it would be really nice to still have working social media.

For the moment, I've got a shiny new account at @edschweppe@masto.ai - which, if I understand things correctly, is the magical string one pastes into the search box on a federated server running Mastodon in order to "follow" said shiny new account.

Twitter has kindly reminded me that I've been on the bird site for twelve years.

My first Tweet wasn't anything terribly original, and most of the early "content" was Echo Bazaar/Fallen London based. Heck, the reason for joining in the first place was that Failbetter Games was using Twitter as their authentication mechanism, and (IIRC) a bunch of the Shadow Unit fans were raving about Fallen London.

I joined Dreamwidth a couple of years earlier, LiveJournal having started to show signs of impending clusterfuckitude.

Sounds like the folks at Twitter Corporate have just been given 44 billion reasons to let Elon Musk buy them out:

I've been on Twitter for quite a while (my first tweet was on June 11, 2010), ever since the folks I knew via the Shadow Unit fandom started playing the Fallen London / Echo Bazaar online game (which used Twitter as its login platform). I'm not planning on leaving Twitter any time soon, especially as $44b is a lot of cash. On the other hand, I did put in a request for my current Twitter archive, just in case ...
