Local COVID-19 updates
Jul. 21st, 2020 05:50 pmAs of 4PM today, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is reporting 17 newly reported confirmed deaths (for a total of 8,231), 165 newly reported confirmed cases (for a total of 107,221), and 7,821 new patients tested by molecular tests (for a total of 1,052,369), with a total of 1,353,802 molecular tests administered to date. The ratio of newly confirmed cases to individuals tested by molecular test is 2.1%. The state also reported zero newly reported probable deaths (for a total of 219), 79 newly reported probable cases (for a total of 6,812), and 573 patients tested by antibody tests (for a total of 87,006). Combining the confirmed and probable numbers gives 17 new deaths (for a total of 8,450) and 244 new cases (for a total of 114,033).
Not good news. Confirmed deaths up. Confirmed cases down slightly, but tests down by way more, and the percent-positive rate jumped back up above two percent. And the hospitalization numbers (both the three-day average number of COVID-19 patients in hospital and the number of hospitals using surge capacity) are up. The three-day average count of confirmed deaths is down, but I've got a sneaking suspicion that it'll be jumping up tomorrow, as well. The good news, such as there is of it, is that all these numbers are still far below the state's peaks back in mid-April.
Further bad news, not just for Massachusetts but for the entire country: week-long delays in getting COVID-19 test results back:
