Local COVID-19 updates
Jul. 22nd, 2020 06:11 pmAs of 4PM today, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is reporting 18 newly reported confirmed deaths (for a total of 8,249), 192 newly reported confirmed cases (for a total of 107,413), and 10,786 new patients tested by molecular tests (for a total of 1,063,155), with a total of 1,369,551 molecular tests administered to date. The ratio of newly confirmed cases to individuals tested by molecular test is 1.8%. The state also reported zero newly reported probable deaths (for a total of 219), 95 newly reported probable cases (for a total of 6,907), and 340 patients tested by antibody tests (for a total of 87,346). Combining the confirmed and probable numbers gives 18 new deaths (for a total of 8,468) and 287 new cases (for a total of 114,320).
Confirmed deaths and cases both up, which is never good news; the slightly better news is that the number of molecular tests is also up, while the day's percent-positive rate is back down below two percent. However, all four of the longer-term trend indicators went in the wrong direction today: the seven-day weighted average positive molecular test rate ticked up to 1.8%, the three-day average number of COVID-19 patients in hospital ticked up above 500 again (to 509), the number of hospitals using surge capacity ticked back up to six, and the three-day average number of COVID-19 deaths ticked up to 12.
Today being Wednesday, the state also released its Weekly COVID-19 Public Health Report. My town of Acton is listed as having 169 confirmed cases (6 in the last 14 days), and 3,232 persons tested (411 in the last 14 days, with 6 positive tests), for a "percent positivity" of 1.46% over the past 14 days. The corresponding statewide numbers are 107,413 cases (2,210 in the last 14 days), 1,368,551 persons tested (180,506 in the last 14 days, with 3,011 positive), and 1.67% positive tests over the past 14 days.
The town of Acton has yet to post an update today. As of the most recent report at 12:30PM on July 16, the town reported 180 cumulative cases of COVID-19 with 3 individuals in isolation, 156 recovered and 21 fatalities. I remain baffled why the state is reporting 169 cases in Acton while the town is reporting 180 cases.
