Local COVID-19 updates
Jan. 24th, 2022 07:04 pmSigh. The state changed the way they report stuff in their raw data file with (apparently) no announcement at all. Again. This time, it looks like they're not bothering to update hospitalization data over the weekend, and are instead using Friday's numbers for their Monday report. Of course, that completely breaks my logic for getting useful hospitalization data out of their spreadsheet. Again. For today, at least, I hand-calculated the hospitalization numbers in the wall-o-text below; I'm not sure how this is going to work going forward.
As of 5PM today, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is reporting 78 newly reported confirmed deaths (24 less than Friday - down 23.5%) for a total of 20,962 deaths, 24,512 newly reported confirmed cases (10,577 more than Friday - up 75.9%) for a total of 1,442,661 cases, and 243,709 newly reported molecular tests (109,392 more than Friday - up 81.4%).
Note that today's case/test data covers 3 days. Averaged over that period, there were 8,170.7 newly reported cases per day (5,764 less than Friday - down 41.4%), and 81,236.3 newly reported molecular tests per day (53,081 less than Friday - down 39.5%).
The seven day average positivity rate is 11.72%, compared to 13.70% Friday. The state also reported 34 newly reported probable deaths (29 more than Friday - up 580.0%) for a total of 552 and 2,521 newly reported probable cases (253 more than Friday - up 11.2%) for a total of 120,358. Combining the confirmed and probable numbers gives 112 new deaths for a total of 21,514 and 27,033 new cases for a total of 1,563,019. There were 2,984 COVID-19 patients in hospital (121 less than Friday), 433 COVID-19 patients in ICUs (13 less than Friday) and 254 COVID-19 patients on ventilators (intubated) (15 less than Friday).
Of the four overview trends (formerly the Page 2 "key metrics"), the 7-day average of newly confirmed cases is 8,295.0 (515 less than Friday - down 5.8%), 12,860% above the lowest observed value of 64.0 on 6/25/2021 and 65.0% below the highest observed value of 23,123.0 on 1/8/2022. The 7-day weighted average of positive molecular test rate is 11.72% (0 less than Friday - down 14.5%), 3,701% above the lowest observed value of 0.3% on 6/25/2021 and 58% below the highest observed value of 27.7% on 4/15/2020. The 7-day average number of COVID-19 patients in hospital is 3,161 (30 less than Friday), 3618% above the lowest observed value of 85.0 on 7/9/2021 and 18% below the highest observed value of 3,874.0 on 4/27/2020. The 7-day average number of COVID-19 deaths is 57.0 (1 more than Friday - up 1.8%), 5,600% above the lowest observed value of 1.0 on 7/11/2021 and 68% below the highest observed value of 175.0 on 4/24/2020.
Two weeks ago, the 7 day confirmed case average was 18,960.0, the 7 day confirmed deaths average was 39.0, the 7 day hospitalization average was 2,593.0, and the 7 day weighted average positivity rate was 22.39%.
One year ago, the 7 day confirmed case average was 3,106.0, the 7 day confirmed deaths average was 61.0, the 7 day hospitalization average was 2,130.0, and the 7 day weighted average positivity rate was 4.85% (or 6.36% excluding higher education).

The day-to-day comparisons are actually pretty good, with the proviso that weekend reporting is wonky and the state keeps changing how they report stuff. Newly reported deaths are down, newly reported confirmed cases are down (if you average today's number over the three days it represents, that is) and hospitalizations are also down. Three of the four seven-day averages (cases, hospitalizations and percent-positive) are down as well; deaths are up, but not by as much as one might have feared. It is really looking like Massachusetts, at least, is coming off its Omicron peak. On the other hand, all those numbers are still way, way too damn high for comfort.
The town of Acton's current Google Data Studio dashboard is showing 137 active and 2,547 cumulative cases as of January 20. The most recent "newsflash style update" at 7PM on December 21, 2021, the town reported 1538 cumulative cases with 89 individuals in isolation, 1417 recovered and 32 fatalities.
