Local COVID-19 updates
Sep. 23rd, 2021 09:03 pmAs of 5PM today, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is reporting 23 newly reported confirmed deaths (1 less than yesterday - down 4.2%) for a total of 18,141 deaths, 1,885 newly reported confirmed cases (64 more than yesterday - up 3.5%) for a total of 747,656 cases, and 109,695 newly reported molecular tests (5,626 more than yesterday - up 5.4%). The seven day average positivity rate is 2.11%, compared to 2.14% yesterday. Excluding higher education, the seven day average positivity rate is 3.68%; that rate was not reported yesterday. The state also reported zero newly reported probable deaths (same as yesterday) for a total of 386 and 119 newly reported probable cases (40 less than yesterday - down 25.2%) for a total of 53,253. Combining the confirmed and probable numbers gives 23 new deaths for a total of 18,527 and 2,004 new cases for a total of 800,909. There were 606 COVID-19 patients in hospital (12 less than yesterday - down 1.9%), 165 COVID-19 patients in ICUs (5 less than yesterday - down 2.9%) and 96 COVID-19 patients on ventilators (intubated) (4 less than yesterday - down 4.0%).
Of the four overview trends (formerly the Page 2 "key metrics"), the 7-day average of newly confirmed cases is 1,205.0 (1 less than yesterday - down 0.1%), 1,782% above the lowest observed value of 64.0 on 6/25/2021 and 81.0% below the highest observed value of 6,232.0 on 1/8/2021. The 7-day weighted average of positive molecular test rate is 2.11% (0 less than yesterday - down 1.1%), 585% above the lowest observed value of 0.3% on 6/25/2021 and 92% below the highest observed value of 27.7% on 4/15/2020. The 7-day average number of COVID-19 patients in hospital is 653.0 (13 less than yesterday - down 2.0%), 668% above the lowest observed value of 85.0 on 7/9/2021 and 84% below the highest observed value of 3,874.0 on 4/27/2020. The 7-day average number of COVID-19 deaths is 12.0 (2 more than yesterday - up 20.0%), 1,100% above the lowest observed value of 1.0 on 7/11/2021 and 94% below the highest observed value of 175.0 on 4/24/2020.
Statewide, hospitals reported 9,035 non-ICU beds, of which 7,800 (86.3%) were occupied by non-COVID patients, 441 (4.9%) were occupied by COVID patients, and 794 (8.8%) remained available. Hospitals also reported 1,299 ICU beds, of which 876 (67.4%) were occupied by non-COVID patients, 165 (12.7%) were occupied by COVID patients, and 258 (19.9%) remained available. By comparison, hospitals reported yesterday a total of 8,908 non-ICU beds, of which 7,673 (86.1%) were occupied by non-COVID patients, 448 (5%) were occupied by COVID patients, and 787 (8.8%) remained available. Hospitals also reported yesterday a total of 1,297 ICU beds, of which 852 (65.7%) were occupied by non-COVID patients, 170 (13.1%) were occupied by COVID patients, and 275 (21.2%) remained available.
Two weeks ago, the 7 day confirmed case average was 1,142.0, the 7 day confirmed deaths average was 7.0, the 7 day hospitalization average was 596.0, and the 7 day weighted average positivity rate was 2.48% (or 4.16% excluding higher education).
Today being Thursday, the state also included city/town specific information in the daily download. My town of Acton is listed as having 1,075 total cases, with a two-week case count of 26 cases, a daily incidence rate of 7.8 which is lower than last week, with a corresponding risk color code of green (if the state was still reporting color codes). Acton is also listed as having 60,872 total tests, with a two-week total test count of 2,429 and a two-week positive test count of 27, for a percent-positive rate of 1.11 which is lower than last week. The corresponding statewide figures are 745,771 total cases, with a two-week case count of 23,213 cases, a daily incidence rate of 23.8 which is higher than last week. Massachusetts is also listed as having 27,945,853 total tests, with a two-week total test count of 1,161,494 and a two-week positive test count of 25,975, for a percent-positive rate of 2.24 which is lower than last week.
As of July 1, 2021, the state is no longer reporting risk color codes. However, if it was, of the 351 cites and towns in the Commonwealth, 91 would be coded gray (compared to 89 last week), 23 would be coded green (compared to 23 last week), and 188 would be coded yellow (compared to 187 last week). The remaining 49 towns would be coded red (compared to 52 last week): Acushnet, Athol, Berkley, Blackstone, Brookfield, Carver, Charlton, Chicopee, Dartmouth, Dighton, Fairhaven, Fall River, Fitchburg, Freetown, Hadley, Haverhill, Holyoke, Lakeville, Lawrence, Leicester, Littleton, Ludlow, Lunenburg, Mattapoisett, Methuen, Middleborough, Middleton, Millbury, Monson, New Bedford, Orange, Plainville, Rutland, Seekonk, Somerset, Southborough, Southbridge, Springfield, Sturbridge, Sutton, Taunton, Templeton, Topsfield, Tyngsborough, Ware, Wareham, Warren, Westminster, and Westport.
15 cities/towns would be newly coded red this week (Brookfield, Dighton, Fairhaven, Fitchburg, Hadley, Haverhill, Mattapoisett, Middleton, Millbury, Seekonk, Somerset, Southborough, Sutton, Tyngsborough, and Warren) and 18 cities/towns would no longer be coded red this week (Ashburnham, Billerica, Douglas, Dudley, Georgetown, Halifax, Hampden, Hanson, North Brookfield, Oxford, Palmer, Sandwich, Spencer, Sterling, Tisbury, West Boylston, West Springfield, and Winchendon).
Of the 10 towns near my church, one is coded gray (Harvard), 3 are coded green (Acton, Berlin, and Bolton), 6 are coded yellow (Boxborough, Hudson, Marlborough, Maynard, Stow, and Sudbury), and none are coded red.
The daily raw data file used to create this report is available here.
Day-over-day deaths are inching downward, and the hospitalization totals are dropping as well; however, the cases count is up again. The seven-day averages for hospitalizations and percent-positive dropped a bit; alas, the other two are both up. The state reached the not-terribly-happy milestone of breaking the 800k cases mark, with 800,909 combined confirmed and probable cases as of today's report.
The weekly city/town numbers show a very slight improvement, in that the total number of communities that would qualify as the highest-risk "red" category (if the state cared, that is) dropped from 52 last week to 49 this week. (One of those communities, Littleton, is right next door to me; as I noted yesterday, they at least have a town-wide mask mandate.) My own town of Acton dropped from yellow last week to green this week, which I suppose is better than being hit in the face with a dead fish.
The town of Acton's current Google Data Studio dashboard is showing 19 active and 1,116 cumulative cases as of September 22. The most recent "newsflash style update" at 11:45AM on May 28, 2021 reported 978 cumulative cases with 3 individuals in isolation, 943 persons recovered and 32 fatalities.
