Hey, it's the first day back from the looong weekend! How much of a mess is the data this time?

As of 5PM today, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is reporting 12 newly reported confirmed deaths (2 more than Friday - up 20.0%) for a total of 17,921 deaths, 5,484 newly reported confirmed cases (3,781 more than Friday - up 222.0%) for a total of 720,175 cases, and 264,404 newly reported molecular tests (181,566 more than Friday - up 219.2%).

Note that today's data covers 4 days. Averaged over that period, there were 3.0 newly reported deaths per day (7 less than Friday - down 70.0%), 1,371.0 newly reported cases per day (332 less than Friday - down 19.5%), and 66,101.0 newly reported molecular tests per day (16,737 less than Friday - down 20.2%).

The seven day average positivity rate is 2.32%, compared to 2.43% Friday. The state also reported zero newly reported probable deaths (4 less than Friday) for a total of 377 and 199 newly reported probable cases (9 less than Friday - down 4.3%) for a total of 51,092. Combining the confirmed and probable numbers gives 12 new deaths for a total of 18,298 and 5,683 new cases for a total of 771,267. There were 601 COVID-19 patients in hospital (8 less than Friday - down 1.3%), 164 COVID-19 patients in ICUs (2 more than Friday - up 1.2%) and 92 COVID-19 patients on ventilators (intubated) (8 less than Friday - down 8.0%).

Of the four overview trends (formerly the Page 2 "key metrics"), the 7-day average of newly confirmed cases is 1,146.0 (30 more than Friday - up 2.7%), 1,690% above the lowest observed value of 64.0 on 6/25/2021 and 82.0% below the highest observed value of 6,232.0 on 1/8/2021. The 7-day weighted average of positive molecular test rate is 2.32% (0 less than Friday - down 4.5%), 653% above the lowest observed value of 0.3% on 6/25/2021 and 92% below the highest observed value of 27.7% on 4/15/2020. The 7-day average number of COVID-19 patients in hospital is 592.0 (4 less than Friday - down 0.7%), 596% above the lowest observed value of 85.0 on 7/9/2021 and 85% below the highest observed value of 3,874.0 on 4/27/2020. The 7-day average number of COVID-19 deaths is 5.0 (3 less than Friday - down 37.5%), 400% above the lowest observed value of 1.0 on 7/12/2021 and 98% below the highest observed value of 175.0 on 4/24/2020.

Statewide, hospitals reported 8,795 non-ICU beds, of which 7,069 (80.4%) were occupied by non-COVID patients, 437 (5.0%) were occupied by COVID patients, and 1,289 (14.7%) remained available. Hospitals also reported 1,312 ICU beds, of which 831 (63.3%) were occupied by non-COVID patients, 164 (12.5%) were occupied by COVID patients, and 317 (24.2%) remained available. By comparison, hospitals reported Friday a total of 8,953 non-ICU beds, of which 7,688 (85.9%) were occupied by non-COVID patients, 447 (5%) were occupied by COVID patients, and 818 (9.1%) remained available. Hospitals also reported Friday a total of 1,314 ICU beds, of which 862 (65.6%) were occupied by non-COVID patients, 162 (12.3%) were occupied by COVID patients, and 290 (22.1%) remained available.

Two weeks ago, the 7 day confirmed case average was 971.0, the 7 day confirmed deaths average was 5.0, the 7 day hospitalization average was 486.0, and the 7 day weighted average positivity rate was 2.72%.

The daily raw data file used to create this report is available here.

Day-to-day comparisons are well-nigh impossible, given today's report covers four days of data and Friday's only covered one. On the other hand, averaging today's death and case numbers over four days (and pretending weekend reporting wonkiness magically didn't happen), the daily death and case rates were down quite a bit compared to Friday. Even better, there was a net drop in hospitalizations. The seven-day averages are a bit of a mixed bag, as that for cases ticked upward while the other three dropped. Today's CDC county-by-county data shows Middlesex County down to "substantial" community transmission, which is definitely an improvement; I'm not going to celebrate too much, though, until that rating stays down for a couple of days. (I haven't yet seen how the CDC ratings are impacted by the state screwing around on a long weekend.)

The town of Acton's current Google Data Studio dashboard is showing 21 active and 1,078 cumulative cases as of September 6. The most recent "newsflash style update" at 11:45AM on May 28, 2021 reported 978 cumulative cases with 3 individuals in isolation, 943 persons recovered and 32 fatalities.
