As of 5PM today, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is reporting 8 newly reported confirmed deaths (2 more than yesterday - up 33.3%) for a total of 17,711 deaths, 742 newly reported confirmed cases (144 more than yesterday - up 24.1%) for a total of 671,644 cases, and 40,967 newly reported molecular tests (150 less than yesterday - down 0.4%).The seven day average positivity rate is 1.92%, compared to 1.87% yesterday. Excluding higher education, the seven day average positivity rate is 2.43%; that rate was not reported yesterday. The state also reported zero newly reported probable deaths (same as yesterday) for a total of 368 and 163 newly reported probable cases (101 more than yesterday - up 162.9%) for a total of 47,205. Combining the confirmed and probable numbers gives 8 new deaths for a total of 18,079 and 905 new cases for a total of 718,849. There were 176 COVID-19 patients in hospital (13 more than yesterday - up 8.0%), 39 COVID-19 patients in ICUs (3 more than yesterday - up 8.3%) and 17 COVID-19 patients on ventilators (intubated) (3 more than yesterday - up 21.4%).
Of the four overview trends (formerly the Page 2 "key metrics"), the 7-day average of newly confirmed cases is 428.0 (20 more than yesterday - up 4.9%), 568% above the lowest observed value of 64.0 on 6/25/2021 and 94.0% below the highest observed value of 6,235.0 on 1/8/2021. The 7-day weighted average of positive molecular test rate is 1.92% (0 more than yesterday - up 2.7%), 523% above the lowest observed value of 0.3% on 6/25/2021 and 93% below the highest observed value of 27.7% on 4/15/2020. The 7-day average number of COVID-19 patients in hospital is 141.0 (9 more than yesterday - up 6.8%), 65% above the lowest observed value of 85.0 on 7/9/2021 and 97% below the highest observed value of 3,874.0 on 4/27/2020. The 7-day average number of COVID-19 deaths is 4.0 (1 more than yesterday - up 33.3%), 300% above the lowest observed value of 1.0 on 7/12/2021 and 98% below the highest observed value of 175.0 on 4/24/2020.
Statewide, hospitals reported 9,082 non-ICU beds, of which 8,043 (88.6%) were occupied by non-COVID patients, 137 (1.5%) were occupied by COVID patients, and 902 (9.9%) remained available. Hospitals also reported 1,339 ICU beds, of which 976 (72.9%) were occupied by non-COVID patients, 39 (2.9%) were occupied by COVID patients, and 324 (24.2%) remained available. By comparison, hospitals reported yesterday a total of 9,053 non-ICU beds, of which 7,968 (88.0%) were occupied by non-COVID patients, 127 (1%) were occupied by COVID patients, and 958 (10.6%) remained available. Hospitals also reported yesterday a total of 1,331 ICU beds, of which 961 (72.2%) were occupied by non-COVID patients, 36 (2.7%) were occupied by COVID patients, and 334 (25.1%) remained available.
Two weeks ago, the 7 day confirmed case average was 135.0, the 7 day confirmed deaths average was 1.0, the 7 day hospitalization average was 95.0, and the 7 day weighted average positivity rate was 0.78% (or 1.03% excluding higher education).
Today being Thursday, the state also included city/town specific information in the daily download. My town of Acton is listed as having 964 total cases, with a two-week case count of 11 cases, a daily incidence rate of 3.3 which is higher than last week, with a corresponding risk color code of green (if the state was still reporting color codes). Acton is also listed as having 52,485 total tests, with a two-week total test count of 1,152 and a two-week positive test count of 11, for a percent-positive rate of 0.95 which is higher than last week. The corresponding statewide figures are 670,902 total cases, with a two-week case count of 5,120 cases, a daily incidence rate of 5.3 which is higher than last week. Massachusetts is also listed as having 24,561,812 total tests, with a two-week total test count of 389,426 and a two-week positive test count of 5,696, for a percent-positive rate of 1.46 which is higher than last week.
As of July 1, 2021, the state is no longer reporting risk color codes. However, if it was, of the 351 cites and towns in the Commonwealth, 237 would be coded gray (compared to 297 last week), 105 would be coded green (compared to 53 last week), and 5 would be coded yellow (compared to zero last week). The remaining 4 towns would be coded red (compared to 1 last week): Norfolk, Provincetown, Raynham, and Yarmouth.
3 cities/towns would be newly coded red this week (Norfolk, Raynham, and Yarmouth) and 0 cities/towns would no longer be coded red this week ().
Of the 10 towns near my church, 8 are coded gray (Berlin, Bolton, Boxborough, Harvard, Marlborough, Maynard, Stow, and Sudbury), 2 are coded green (Acton, and Hudson), none are coded yellow, and none are coded red.
The daily raw data file used to create this report is available here.
And the beat goes on. Deaths are up day-over-day, cases are up day-over-day, hospitalizations are up day-over-day, all four seven-day averages are up day-over-day. Today's 742 newly reported confirmed cases are the highest single-day count since May 8, when the state reported 795 such cases.
The city and town data is also trending in a bad direction; if the state was still reporting its risk color codes, five new communities would have jumped into the yellow category and three more into the red. Just a couple of weeks ago, not a single community was higher than green. The only good news is that hospitalizations aren't climbing nearly as quickly as are case counts; presumably that means the vaccines are working as desired.
But there's no sign at all yet that Governor Charlie Baker is going to do anything. Other than look concerned, perhaps.
The town of Acton's current Google Data Studio dashboard is showing 8 active and 998 cumulative cases as of July 28. The most recent "newsflash style update" at 11:45AM on May 28, 2021 reported 978 cumulative cases with 3 individuals in isolation, 943 persons recovered and 32 fatalities.
