Local COVID-19 updates
Jun. 9th, 2021 05:44 pmThe good news? It's Wednesday, and the state didn't have any technical issues with today's data. The not-so-good news? Well ...
As of 5PM today, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is reporting 5 newly reported confirmed deaths (3 more than yesterday - up 150.0%) for a total of 17,559 deaths, 116 newly reported confirmed cases (16 more than yesterday - up 16.0%) for a total of 662,459 cases, and 36,383 newly reported molecular tests (14,119 more than yesterday - up 63.4%). The seven day average positivity rate is 0.55%, compared to 0.52% yesterday. Excluding higher education, the seven day average positivity rate is 0.77%, compared to 0.74% yesterday. The number of estimated active cases was 3,480 (325 less than yesterday - down 8.5%). The state also reported zero newly reported probable deaths (same as yesterday) for a total of 363 and 27 newly reported probable cases (6 more than yesterday - up 28.6%) for a total of 46,000. Combining the confirmed and probable numbers gives 5 new deaths for a total of 17,922 and 143 new cases for a total of 708,459. There were 173 COVID-19 patients in hospital (same as yesterday), 57 COVID-19 patients in ICUs (same as yesterday) and 29 COVID-19 patients on ventilators (intubated) (2 less than yesterday - down 6.5%).
Today being Wednesday, the weekly data points were also updated. The average age of hospitalized patients over the past week is 60 (2 more than last week - up 3.4%) while the average age of deaths over the last two weeks is 74 (1 more than last week - up 1.4%). The fourteen-day average test turnaround time (from sample draw to DPH report) is 1.59 (compared to 1.70 last week). The average daily incidence per 100k population over the last 14 days is 2.4 (compared to 3.9 last week).
Of the four overview trends (formerly the Page 2 "key metrics"), the 7-day average of newly confirmed cases is 109.0 (11 less than yesterday - down 9.2%), 0% above the lowest observed value of 109.0 on 6/8/2021 and 99.0% below the highest observed value of 6,237.0 on 1/8/2021. The 7-day weighted average of positive molecular test rate is 0.55% (0 more than yesterday - up 6.1%), 10% above the lowest observed value of 0.5% on 6/7/2021 and 98% below the highest observed value of 27.7% on 4/15/2020. By comparison, hospitals reported yesterday a total of 9,052 non-ICU beds, of which 7,387 (81.6%) were occupied by non-COVID patients, 116 (1%) were occupied by COVID patients, and 1,549 (17.1%) remained available. Hospitals also reported yesterday a total of 1,346 ICU beds, of which 884 (65.7%) were occupied by non-COVID patients, 57 (4.2%) were occupied by COVID patients, and 405 (30.1%) remained available.
Two weeks ago, the 7 day confirmed case average was 230.0, the 7 day confirmed deaths average was 6.0, the 7 day hospitalization average was 284.0, and the 7 day weighted average positivity rate was 0.86% (or 1.31% excluding higher education).

Day-to-day changes are ... not good, as both deaths and cases are up, along with the seven-day positivity average. On the other hand, the estimated active case count dropped yet again, while the hospitalization count held steady. Of the other three seven-day averages, those for cases and deaths are once again at their Lowest Observed Values while the hospitalization average continues to drop - and, in particularly good news, the fourteen-day average daily incidence is down yet again, to a record low of 2.4 new cases per 100k population per day.
As overall values go, today's numbers are pretty damn good; it's just the day-to-day uptick that's a bit worrisome. Oh, and there's that Delta variant to be worried about ...
