The seven day average positivity rate is 0.62%, compared to 0.69% yesterday. Excluding higher education, the seven day average positivity rate is 0.91%, compared to 0.98% yesterday. The number of estimated active cases was 5,099 (332 less than yesterday - down 6.1%). The state also reported zero newly reported probable deaths (same as yesterday) for a total of 363 and 17 newly reported probable cases (17 less than yesterday - down 50.0%) for a total of 45,888. There were 203 COVID-19 patients in hospital (13 less than yesterday - down 6.0%), 69 COVID-19 patients in ICUs (7 less than yesterday - down 9.2%) and 36 COVID-19 patients on ventilators (intubated) (1 less than yesterday - down 2.7%).
Of the four overview trends (formerly the Page 2 "key metrics"), the 7-day average of newly confirmed cases is 111.0 (6 less than yesterday - down 5.1%), 0% above the lowest observed value of 111.0 on 6/2/2021 and 99.0% below the highest observed value of 6,238.0 on 1/8/2021. The 7-day weighted average of positive molecular test rate is 0.62% (0 less than yesterday - down 9.9%), 0% above the lowest observed value of 0.6% on 6/2/2021 and 98% below the highest observed value of 27.7% on 4/15/2020. The 7-day average number of COVID-19 patients in hospital is 230.0 (8 less than yesterday - down 3.4%), 48% above the lowest observed value of 155.0 on 8/26/2020 and 95% below the highest observed value of 3,874.0 on 4/27/2020. The 7-day average number of COVID-19 deaths is 4.0 (same as yesterday), 0% above the lowest observed value of 4.0 on 6/1/2021 and 98% below the highest observed value of 175.0 on 4/24/2020.
Statewide, hospitals reported 9,141 non-ICU beds, of which 7,672 (83.9%) were occupied by non-COVID patients, 134 (1.5%) were occupied by COVID patients, and 1,335 (14.6%) remained available. Hospitals also reported 1,358 ICU beds, of which 917 (67.5%) were occupied by non-COVID patients, 69 (5.1%) were occupied by COVID patients, and 372 (27.4%) remained available. By comparison, hospitals reported yesterday a total of 8,999 non-ICU beds, of which 7,232 (80.4%) were occupied by non-COVID patients, 140 (2%) were occupied by COVID patients, and 1,627 (18.1%) remained available. Hospitals also reported yesterday a total of 1,354 ICU beds, of which 883 (65.2%) were occupied by non-COVID patients, 76 (5.6%) were occupied by COVID patients, and 395 (29.2%) remained available.
Two weeks ago, the 7 day confirmed case average was 337.0, the 7 day confirmed deaths average was 9.0, the 7 day hospitalization average was 346.0, and the 7 day weighted average positivity rate was 1.03% (or 1.66% excluding higher education).
Today being Thursday, the state also included city/town specific information in the daily download. My town of Acton is listed as having 948 total cases, with a two-week case count of less than five cases, a daily incidence rate of 0.6 which is lower than last week, and a risk color code of gray. Acton is also listed as having 48,028 total tests, with a two-week total test count of 1,234 and a two-week positive test count of 2, for a percent-positive rate of 0.16 which is lower than last week. The corresponding statewide figures are 661,394 total cases, with a two-week case count of 3,824 cases, a daily incidence rate of 3.9 which is lower than last week, and a risk color code of gray. Massachusetts is also listed as having 22,988,797 total tests, with a two-week total test count of 558,218 and a two-week positive test count of 4,736, for a percent-positive rate of 0.85 which is lower than last week.
Of the 351 cites and towns in the Commonwealth, 273 are coded gray (compared to 233 last week), 71 are coded green (compared to 98 last week), and 7 are coded yellow (compared to 19 last week). There were no cities or towns coded red this week. 1 cities/towns are no longer coded red this week (Tisbury).
Of the 10 towns near my church, 9 are coded gray (Acton, Berlin, Bolton, Boxborough, Harvard, Hudson, Maynard, Stow, and Sudbury), one is coded green (Marlborough), none are coded yellow, and none are coded red.
The daily raw data file used to create this report is available here.
The day-to-day changes aren't good - deaths are up and cases are way up - but it's been a weird week for reporting, and I'm not going to get too worried about one day of possible statistical noise. Estimated active cases are still dropping, as are hospitalizations, and now three of the four seven-day averages (cases, deaths and percent-positive) are down to their lowest observed values.
Even better, to my mind, is the fact that this week none of the 351 cities and towns in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts have a high-enough case rate to fall into the high-risk, "red" color code, while only seven meet the criteria for a moderate-risk "yellow" rating. The vast majority of the communities in the state qualifiy as "grey", meaning ten or fewer total cases over two weeks for smaller towns (<=50k residents) and fifteen or fewer total cases for larger towns (50k plus). It was only a couple of months ago that there were seventy-seven "red" communities and the trend seemed to be ever upward. I'm very glad to see that no longer being the case.
The town of Acton's current Google Data Studio dashboard is showing 3 active and 981 cumulative cases as of June 2. The most recent "newsflash style update" at 11:45AM on May 28, 2021 reported 978 cumulative cases with 3 individuals in isolation, 943 persons recovered and 32 fatalities.
