Hey, today's data is finally available! Of course, there's no word on why it was delayed. On the other hand, it was delayed last Wednesday, and the Wednesday before that, so maybe there's just something about Wednesdays in May?

Anyway, as of 5PM today, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is reporting 14 newly reported confirmed deaths (8 more than yesterday - up 133.3%) for a total of 17,433 deaths, 425 newly reported confirmed cases (66 more than yesterday - up 18.4%) for a total of 657,903 cases, and 60,201 newly reported molecular tests (22,574 more than yesterday - up 60.0%). The seven day average positivity rate is 1.05%, compared to 1.06% yesterday. Excluding higher education, the seven day average positivity rate is 1.70%, compared to 1.71% yesterday. The number of estimated active cases was 11,924 (777 less than yesterday - down 6.1%). The state also reported 1 newly reported probable death (same as yesterday) for a total of 361 and 91 newly reported probable cases (12 more than yesterday - up 15.2%) for a total of 45,389. Combining the confirmed and probable numbers gives 15 new deaths for a total of 17,794 and 516 new cases for a total of 703,292. There were 332 COVID-19 patients in hospital (6 more than yesterday - up 1.8%), 96 COVID-19 patients in ICUs (3 more than yesterday - up 3.2%) and 56 COVID-19 patients on ventilators (intubated) (2 more than yesterday - up 3.7%).

Today being Wednesday, the weekly data points were also updated. The average age of hospitalized patients over the past week is 59 (4 more than last week - up 7.3%) while the average age of deaths over the last two weeks is 70 (same as last week). The fourteen-day average test turnaround time (from sample draw to DPH report) is 1.38 (compared to 1.34 last week). The average daily incidence per 100k population over the last 14 days is 8.7 (compared to 12.5 last week).

Of the four overview trends (formerly the Page 2 "key metrics"), the 7-day average of newly confirmed cases is 351.0 (19 less than yesterday - down 5.1%), 123% above the lowest observed value of 157.0 on 7/4/2020 and 95.0% below the highest observed value of 6,238.0 on 1/8/2021. The 7-day weighted average of positive molecular test rate is 1.05% (0 less than yesterday - down 0.8%), 37% above the lowest observed value of 0.8% on 9/21/2020 and 96% below the highest observed value of 27.7% on 4/15/2020. The 7-day average number of COVID-19 patients in hospital is 359.0 (14 less than yesterday - down 3.8%), 131% above the lowest observed value of 155.0 on 8/26/2020 and 91% below the highest observed value of 3,874.0 on 4/27/2020. The 7-day average number of COVID-19 deaths is 9.0 (1 more than yesterday - up 12.5%), 12% above the lowest observed value of 8.0 on 5/18/2021 and 95% below the highest observed value of 175.0 on 4/24/2020.

Statewide, hospitals reported 9,160 non-ICU beds, of which 7,486 (81.7%) were occupied by non-COVID patients, 236 (2.6%) were occupied by COVID patients, and 1,438 (15.7%) remained available. Hospitals also reported 1,361 ICU beds, of which 891 (65.5%) were occupied by non-COVID patients, 96 (7.1%) were occupied by COVID patients, and 374 (27.5%) remained available. By comparison, hospitals reported yesterday a total of 9,083 non-ICU beds, of which 7,040 (77.5%) were occupied by non-COVID patients, 233 (3%) were occupied by COVID patients, and 1,810 (19.9%) remained available. Hospitals also reported yesterday a total of 1,359 ICU beds, of which 825 (60.7%) were occupied by non-COVID patients, 93 (6.8%) were occupied by COVID patients, and 441 (32.5%) remained available.

Two weeks ago, the 7 day confirmed case average was 676.0, the 7 day confirmed deaths average was 9.0, the 7 day hospitalization average was 542.0, and the 7 day weighted average positivity rate was 1.50% (or 2.64% excluding higher education).

The daily raw data file used to create this report is available here.

Day-to-day differences aren't particularly good; newly reported deaths and cases are both up, as are the hospitalization counts. On the other hand, estimated active cases continue to trend downward, as do the seven-day averages for cases, hospitalizations and percent-positive. The weekly update on the fourteen-day incidence rate is encouraging, as that number (8.7 cases per 100k population) is below ten per 100k for the first time since the state started reporting it back in November.

I do wish somebody would explain WTF is going on with the state's data distribtion, though ...

The town of Acton's current Google Data Studio dashboard is showing 4 active and 977 cumulative cases as of May 18. The most recent "newsflash style update" at 12PM on May 17, 2021 reported 975 cumulative cases with 6 individuals in isolation, 937 persons recovered and 32 fatalities.
