As of 5PM today, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is reporting 81 newly reported confirmed deaths (38 more than yesterday - up 88.4%) for a total of 11,630 deaths, 4,509 newly reported confirmed cases (1,216 more than yesterday - up 36.9%) for a total of 322,652 cases, and 97,655 newly reported molecular tests (35,577 more than yesterday - up 57.3%). The seven day average positivity rate is 5.92%, compared to 5.98% yesterday. Excluding higher education, the seven day average positivity rate is 7.34%, compared to 7.48% yesterday. The number of estimated active cases was 81,112 (1,191 less than yesterday - down 1.4%). The state also reported 2 newly reported probable deaths (same as yesterday) for a total of 257 and 305 newly reported probable cases (202 less than yesterday - down 39.8%) for a total of 13,336. Combining the confirmed and probable numbers gives 83 new deaths for a total of 11,887 and 4,814 new cases for a total of 335,988. There were 2,066 COVID-19 patients in hospital (62 more than yesterday - up 3.1%), 409 COVID-19 patients in ICUs (3 less than yesterday - down 0.7%) and 226 COVID-19 patients on ventilators (intubated) (7 less than yesterday - down 3.0%).

Today being Wednesday, the weekly data points were also updated. The average age of hospitalized patients over the past week is 69 (2 more than last week - up 3.0%) while the average age of deaths over the last two weeks is 80 (1 less than last week - down 1.2%). The fourteen-day average test turnaround time (from sample draw to DPH report) is 2.90 (compared to 1.83 last week). The average daily incidence per 100k population over the last 14 days is 63.2 (compared to 65.1 last week).

Of the Commonwealth's four "key metrics" listed on page 2 of the report, the 7-day average of newly confirmed cases is 2,861 (207 less than yesterday - down 6.7%), 1,722% above the lowest observed value of 157 on July 4 and 41% below the highest observed value of 4,778 on December 7. The 7-day weighted average of positive molecular test rate is 5.9% (0 less than yesterday - down 1.0%), 668% above the lowest observed value of 0.8% on September 21 and 79% below the highest observed value of 27.7% on April 15. The 7-day average number of COVID-19 patients in hospital is 1,950 (30 more than yesterday - up 1.6%), 1,158% above the lowest observed value of 155 on August 26 and 50% below the highest observed value of 3,874 on April 27. The 7-day average number of COVID-19 deaths is 48 (4 more than yesterday - up 9.1%), 336% above the lowest observed value of 11 on September 9 and 73% below the highest observed value of 175 on April 24.

Two weeks ago, the 7 day confirmed case average was 3,244, the 7 day confirmed deaths average was 43, the 7 day hospitalization average was 1,458, and the 7 day weighted average positivity rate was 5.9% (or 7.90% excluding higher education).

On a day-to-day basis, there were way more deaths and cases than yesterday, which is awful; on the other hand, both positivity and the estimated active case count are down, which is actually slightly hopeful. And, while the total number of COVID-19 patients is still climbing, the count of ICU and ventilator patients actually dropped a tad. Less encouragingly, the turnaround time for COVID-19 tests is up by more than a full day; hopefully, that's due more to holiday timing than anything else.

The town of Acton's current Google Data Studio dashboard is showing 55 active and 484 cumulative cases as of December 22. The most recent "newsflash style update" at 9PM on December 15 reported 433 cumulative cases with 63 individuals in isolation, 345 persons recovered and 25 fatalities.

I've noticed a correlation between drops in patients on ventilators and rises in the death count . . .
