Local COVID-19 updates
Nov. 29th, 2020 05:18 pmAs of 5PM today, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is reporting 46 newly reported confirmed deaths (6 more than yesterday - up 15.0%) for a total of 10,487 and 2,501 newly reported confirmed cases (413 less than yesterday - down 14.2%) for a total of 217,163. The seven day average positivity rate is 3.80%, compared to 3.57% yesterday. Excluding higher education, the seven day average positivity rate is 5.39%, compared to 5.16% yesterday. The number of estimated active cases was 43,709 (1,160 more than yesterday - up 2.7%). The state also reported zero newly reported probable deaths (1 less than yesterday) for a total of 235 and 105 newly reported probable cases (198 less than yesterday - down 65.3%) for a total of 7,801. Combining the confirmed and probable numbers gives 46 new deaths for a total of 10,722 and 2,606 new cases for a total of 224,964. There were 1,081 COVID-19 patients in hospital (36 more than yesterday - up 3.4%), 238 COVID-19 patients in ICUs (13 more than yesterday - up 5.8%) and 110 COVID-19 patients on ventilators (intubated) (1 less than yesterday - down 0.9%).
Of the Commonwealth's four "key metrics" listed on page 2 of the report, the 7-day average of newly confirmed cases is 1,710 (103 more than yesterday - up 6.4%), 989% above the lowest observed value of 157 on July 4 and 35% below the highest observed value of 2,601 on November 20. The 7-day weighted average of positive molecular test rate is 3.8% (0 more than yesterday - up 6.5%), 390% above the lowest observed value of 0.8% on September 21 and 86% below the highest observed value of 27.7% on April 15. The 7-day average number of COVID-19 patients in hospital is 985 (27 more than yesterday - up 2.8%), 535% above the lowest observed value of 155 on August 26 and 75% below the highest observed value of 3,874 on April 27. The 7-day average number of COVID-19 deaths is 27 (3 more than yesterday - up 12.5%), 145% above the lowest observed value of 11 on September 9 and 85% below the highest observed value of 175 on April 24.
Two weeks ago, the 7 day confirmed case average was 1,772, the 7 day confirmed deaths average was 23, the 7 day hospitalization average was 665, and the 7 day weighted average positivity rate was 3.1% (or 5.16% excluding higher education).
Bad news - and worse because it's the weekend and the case reports can be expected to be lower due to reporting lags. Newly reported deaths up a bunch, cases down (but it's the weekend), positivity creeping every higher, and patients in hospital and ICU both up again. And, regardless of noisy day-to-day variations, we're still seeing well over two thousand new cases every day; one month ago, we were seeing just over one thousand new cases a day, and I was getting worried about that.
Yay, I suppose, that Massachusetts isn't in as dire straits as it was during the spring - yet. It'll be a few days before all the Thanksgiving travelers to other parts of the nation come back, and we see how many of them brought COVID-19 back with them.
The town of Acton has yet to post an update today. As of the most recent report at 7:30PM on November 25, the town of Acton reported 317 cumulative cases of COVID-19 in town with 36 individuals in isolation, 260 recovered and 21 fatalities.
