As of 4PM today, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is reporting 5 newly reported confirmed deaths (10 less than yesterday - down 66.7%) for a total of 9,537 deaths, 821 newly reported confirmed cases (6 less than yesterday - down 0.7%) for a total of 142,295 cases, and 17,238 new patients tested by molecular tests (416 less than yesterday - down 2.4%) for a total of 2,549,525 individuals tested. There were 66,390 new molecular tests reported (4,318 less than yesterday - down 6.1%) with a total of 5,306,041 molecular tests administered to date. The ratio of newly confirmed cases to individuals tested by molecular test is 4.8%, compared to 4.7% yesterday. The state also reported zero newly reported probable deaths (1 less than yesterday) for a total of 221 deaths, and 155 newly reported probable cases (154 more than yesterday - up 15,400.0%) for a total of 3,169 cases. The state also reported 371 patients tested by antibody tests (185 more than yesterday - up 99.5%) for a total of 124,711 patients, and 3,739 patients tested by antigen tests (3,241 more than yesterday - up 650.8%) for a total of 166,394 patients. Combining the confirmed and probable numbers gives 5 new deaths for a total of 9,758 and 976 new cases for a total of 145,464.

The seven day average number of newly confirmed cases per day is 675.7 compared to 600.9 last week (up 12.5%) and 588.0 two weeks ago (up 14.9%). The seven day average number of newly confirmed deaths per day is 17.7 compared to 12.9 last week (up 37.8%) and 16.1 two weeks ago (up 9.7%). The seven day average number of newly tested individuals per day is 15,090.1 compared to 16,176.9 last week (down 6.7%) and 15,836.9 two weeks ago (down 4.7%). The seven day average percentage of individuals coming back confirmed positive per day is 4.5% compared to 3.7% last week and 3.8% two weeks ago. (The above averages are calculated from today's raw data download.)

Of the Commonwealth's four "key metrics" listed on page 2 of the report, the seven-day weighted average positive test rate is 1.3%, 63% above the lowest observed value of 0.8% on September 21. The three-day average number of COVID-19 patients in hospital is 500, 65% above the lowest observed value of 302 on August 29. The number of hospitals using surge capacity is 1, 1 above the lowest observed value of 0 on October 18. The three-day average number of COVID-19 deaths is 15, 61% above the lowest observed value of 9 on September 7.

Day-to-day confirmed cases and deaths are both down - although cases are just barely down - so yay. Tests were down more than cases, which drives the percent-positive ratio up - so boo. Also worthy of a boo is the huge jump in probable cases, along with the stubbornly high numbers on three of the four state "key metrics". The real bad news, to me, is in the seven-day averages, which are still all moving in bad directions, and the fact that the sheer number of new daily cases is pushing the 10 per 100k level. Tomorrow's town-by-town numbers (which include per capita rates) are going to be painful.

The town of Acton has yet to post an update today. As of the most recent report at 9:15PM on October 14, the town of Acton reported 217 cumulative cases of COVID-19 in town with 5 individuals in isolation, 191 recovered and 21 fatalities.
