As of 4PM today, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is reporting 23 newly reported confirmed deaths (7 more than yesterday - up 43.8%) for a total of 9,452 deaths, 568 newly reported confirmed cases (50 more than yesterday - up 9.7%) for a total of 138,651 cases, and 14,737 new patients tested by molecular tests (1,680 more than yesterday - up 12.9%) for a total of 2,471,688 individuals tested. There were 59,123 new molecular tests reported (20,439 more than yesterday - up 52.8%) with a total of 4,955,322 molecular tests administered to date. The ratio of newly confirmed cases to individuals tested by molecular test is 3.9%, compared to 4.0% yesterday. The state also reported 2 newly reported probable deaths (1 more than yesterday - up 100.0%) for a total of 220 deaths, and 19 newly reported probable cases (43 less than yesterday - down 69.4%) for a total of 2,928 cases. The state also reported 236 patients tested by antibody tests (11 less than yesterday - down 4.5%) for a total of 123,572 patients, and 609 patients tested by antigen tests (1,753 less than yesterday - down 74.2%) for a total of 157,165 patients. Combining the confirmed and probable numbers gives 25 new deaths for a total of 9,672 and 587 new cases for a total of 141,579.

The seven day average number of newly confirmed cases per day is 624.9 compared to 545.1 last week (up 14.6%) and 514.0 two weeks ago (up 21.6%). The seven day average number of newly confirmed deaths per day is 14.6 compared to 12.1 last week (up 20.0%) and 16.4 two weeks ago (down 11.3%). The seven day average number of newly tested individuals per day is 15,837.6 compared to 15,494.9 last week (up 2.2%) and 15,423.6 two weeks ago (up 2.7%). The seven day average percentage of individuals coming back confirmed positive per day is 4.0% compared to 3.6% last week and 3.3% two weeks ago. (The above averages are calculated from today's raw data download.)

Of the Commonwealth's four "key metrics" listed on page 2 of the report, the seven-day weighted average positive test rate is 1.3%, 70% above the lowest observed value of 0.8% on September 21. The three-day average number of COVID-19 patients in hospital is 505, 67% above the lowest observed value of 302 on August 29. The number of hospitals using surge capacity is 2, 2 above the lowest observed value of 0 on September 5. The three-day average number of COVID-19 deaths is 19, 100% above the lowest observed value of 9 on September 7.

Not much in the way of good news today. Day-to-day deaths up a lot, confirmed cases up some but probable cases down, and plenty more new molecular tests. The seven-day average case counts are going way up and the seven-day average death counts are starting upward again. Worse, three of the state's four "key metrics" are way above their lowest observed values and are on extended upward trends.

To quote the Boston Globe from their story on these results:
The data have been suggesting that, after a terrifying spring, Massachusetts crushed the virus this summer, but it is now creeping back again.

The town of Acton has not posted an update today, but did do so last night. As of the most recent report at 9:15PM on October 14, the town of Acton reported 217 cumulative cases of COVID-19 in town with 5 individuals in isolation, 191 recovered and 21 fatalities; that's five more cases, two more individuals in isolation, and three more persons recovered compared to the previous report on October 7.
