Local COVID-19 updates
Sep. 25th, 2020 04:34 pmAs of 4PM today, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is reporting 10 newly reported confirmed deaths (5 less than yesterday - down 33.3%) for a total of 9,160 deaths, 454 newly reported confirmed cases (1 less than yesterday - down 0.2%) for a total of 127,317 cases, and 15,854 new patients tested by molecular tests (2,702 less than yesterday - down 14.6%) for a total of 2,160,250 individuals tested, with a total of 3,706,728 molecular tests administered to date. The ratio of newly confirmed cases to individuals tested by molecular test is 2.9%, compared to 2.5% yesterday. The state also reported 1 newly reported probable death (1 more than yesterday) for a total of 213 deaths, and 34 newly reported probable cases (8 more than yesterday - up 30.8%) for a total of 2,164 cases. The state also reported 285 patients tested by antibody tests (36 less than yesterday - down 11.2%) for a total of 119,449 patients, and 1,593 patients tested by antigen tests (130 less than yesterday - down 7.5%) for a total of 124,547 patients. Combining the confirmed and probable numbers gives 11 new deaths for a total of 9,373 and 488 new cases for a total of 129,481.
The seven day average number of newly confirmed cases per day is 392.4 compared to 338.3 last week (up 16.0%) and 309.1 two weeks ago (up 26.9%). The seven day average number of newly confirmed deaths per day is 14.4 compared to 12.6 last week (up 14.8%) and 11.3 two weeks ago (up 27.8%). The seven day average number of molecular tests per day is 16,246.7 compared to 17,272.1 last week (down 5.9%) and 15,210.6 two weeks ago (up 6.8%). The seven day average percentage of tests coming back positive per day is 2.3% compared to 2.0% last week and 2.0% two weeks ago. (The above averages are calculated from today's raw data download.)
Of the Commonwealth's four "key metrics" listed on page 2 of the report, the seven-day weighted average positive test rate is 0.9%, 10% above the lowest observed value of 0.8% on September 22. The three-day average number of COVID-19 patients in hospital is 375, 24% above the lowest observed value of 302 on August 29. The number of hospitals using surge capacity is 2, 2 above the lowest observed value of 0 on September 5. The three-day average number of COVID-19 deaths is 11, 18% above the lowest observed value of 9 on September 7.
Day-to-day, confirmed cases and deaths are down, but probable cases and deaths are up; the net is a tiny uptick in cases and a slightly bigger downtick in deaths. Of greater concern, though, that pesky percentage of people coming up positive for COVID-19 is up yet again (thanks in large part to a big drop in test counts). Of even greater concern, the seven-day averages for deaths, cases and percent-positive are all on upward trends, as is the state's "key metric" of average number of patients in hospital. I would really like to see these numbers going down, people ...
