Local COVID-19 updates
Sep. 7th, 2020 04:13 pmAs of 4PM today, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is reporting 8 newly reported confirmed deaths (2 less than yesterday - down 20.0%) for a total of 8,925 deaths, 222 newly reported confirmed cases (148 less than yesterday - down 40.0%) for a total of 121,046 cases, and 9,870 new patients tested by molecular tests (7,861 less than yesterday - down 44.3%) for a total of 1,867,534 individuals tested, with a total of 2,728,153 molecular tests administered to date. The ratio of newly confirmed cases to individuals tested by molecular test is 2.2%, compared to 2.1% yesterday. The state also reported zero newly reported probable deaths (same as yesterday) for a total of 208 deaths, and 7 newly reported probable cases (7 more than yesterday) for a total of 1,745 cases. The state also reported 72 patients tested by antibody tests (234 less than yesterday - down 76.5%) for a total of 115,013 patients, and 316 patients tested by antigen tests (24 less than yesterday - down 7.1%) for a total of 93,223 patients. Combining the confirmed and probable numbers gives 8 new deaths for a total of 9,133 and 229 new cases for a total of 122,791.
The seven day average number of newly confirmed cases per day is 323.1 compared to 337.6 last week (down 4.3%) and 301.7 two weeks ago (up 7.1%). The seven day average number of newly confirmed deaths per day is 14.0 compared to 15.7 last week (down 10.9%) and 17.7 two weeks ago (down 20.8%). The seven day average number of molecular tests per day is 19,252.3 compared to 21,541.4 last week (down 10.6%) and 20,977.7 two weeks ago (down 8.2%). The seven day average percentage of tests coming back positive per day is 1.8% compared to 1.5% last week and 1.4% two weeks ago. (The above averages are calculated from today's raw data download.)
Of the Commonwealth's four "key metrics" listed on page 2 of the report, the seven-day weighted average positive test rate is 0.9%, 0% above the lowest observed value of 0.9% on September 6. The three-day average number of COVID-19 patients in hospital is 320, 6% above the lowest observed value of 302 on August 29. The number of hospitals using surge capacity is 3, 3 above the lowest observed value of 0 on September 5. The three-day average number of COVID-19 deaths is 12, 9% above the lowest observed value of 11 on August 4.
Day-to-day drops in confirmed cases, deaths and tests are only to be expected on a Monday holiday, so no surprises there. (And, as always, fewer deaths, in particular, are always good news.) That ratio of new cases to new people tested, though, keeps ticking up, and that's worrisome. The seven-day averages are also worrying; cases are still up from two weeks ago, tests are now down compared to both one and two weeks ago, and that percent-positive ratio keeps ticking upwards. These are not signs of continuing to make progress beating back the virus, especially since Massachusetts is just about to start sending kids back to school ...
