Local COVID-19 updates
Sep. 1st, 2020 04:14 pmAs of 4PM today, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is reporting 4 newly reported confirmed deaths (7 less than yesterday - down 63.6%) for a total of 8,831 deaths, 354 newly reported confirmed cases (53 more than yesterday - up 17.6%) for a total of 119,138 cases, and 21,654 new patients tested by molecular tests (2,914 more than yesterday - up 15.5%) for a total of 1,754,422 individuals tested, with a total of 2,448,341 molecular tests administered to date. The ratio of newly confirmed cases to individuals tested by molecular test is 1.6%, compared to 1.6% yesterday. The state also reported 269 patients tested by antibody tests (145 more than yesterday - up 116.9%) for a total of 112,996 and 413 patients tested by antigen tests (187 more than yesterday - up 82.7%) for a total of 87,251.
The seven day average number of newly confirmed cases per day is 338.3 compared to 330.7 last week (up 2.3%) and 259.6 two weeks ago (up 30.3%). The seven day average number of newly confirmed deaths per day is 14.6 compared to 18.7 last week (down 21.9%) and 12.6 two weeks ago (up 15.9%). The seven day average number of molecular tests per day is 21,381.4 compared to 22,831.2 last week (down 6.3%) and 18,594.1 two weeks ago (up 15.0%). The seven day average percentage of tests coming back positive per day is 1.6% compared to 1.4% last week and 1.4% two weeks ago. (The above averages are calculated from today's raw data download.)
Of the Commonwealth's four "key metrics" listed on page 2 of the report, the seven-day weighted average positive test rate is 1.0%, 0% above the lowest observed value of 1.0% on August 31. The three-day average number of COVID-19 patients in hospital is 308, 2% above the lowest observed value of 302 on August 29. The number of hospitals using surge capacity is 1, 1 above the lowest observed value of 0 on August 29. The three-day average number of COVID-19 deaths is 9, 0% above the lowest observed value of 9 on August 29.
Good to see another day-by-day drop in confirmed deaths, as well as a decent increase in molecular tests performed; however, the number of new cases continues to rise, and that's worrisome. I'm also not happy that the seven-day averages for cases and percent-positive are climbing, while the average test count actually dropped from the previous seven-day period.
The state is probably pretty happy that two of their four key metrics actually are at their lowest observed values - and I'd be happy too, if only those case counts were trending downward instead of upward.
The town of Acton has yet to post an update today. As of the most recent report at 3PM on August 31, the town of Acton reported 198 cumulative cases of COVID-19 in town with 4 individuals in isolation, 173 recovered and 21 fatalities.
