As of 4PM this afternoon, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is reporting one hundred fifty one more deaths from COVID-19 (for a total of 1,108 to date), 1,755 new cases (for a total of 29,918) and 5,472 more persons tested (for a total of 132,023). We appear to be in the midst of the long-feared surge in cases and deaths; today's death toll was by far the highest so far for Massachusetts in this pandemic.
The state now is reporting cases by city and town. According to that report, Acton had 35 confirmed cases as of yesterday, giving a rate of 147.48 cases per 100,000 population. The statewide number (again, as of yesterday) was 487.76 cases per 100,000 population, with some of the poorer cities (Lowell, Lawrence, Brockton, etc) having substantially higher rates. Most of my neighboring towns are showing relatively low rates; the major exception is Littleton, whose total case count of 69 and rate of 710.01 cases per 100,000 are clearly affected by the big cluster at the Life Care nursing home. That report is expected to be updated on a weekly basis.
The town of Acton just posted its daily update; as of 9PM, tonight, there are still a total of 39 confirmed cases in town (unchanged from yesterday evening).
