Local COVID-19 updates

And here comes the deluge of new cases. Deaths are up slightly, but cases are up over 50% (2,962 today vs 1,969 yesterday). Today's case count is the highest single-day count since February 4. Hospitalizations are also up; today's 307 patients are the highest since March 4 (and the first time over three hundred since March 6). All four seven-day averages are up.
The weekly city/town data is also in, and conditions are (unsurprisingly) deteriorating. The state gave up on its color-coded risk categories last July, but if they were still reporting those ratings, 23 communities would be in the highest-risk "red" category this week, up from a mere 7 last week. My own town is still in the moderate, "yellow" category, but two nearby towns are solidly in the red, and my own town is at risk of jumping to the red category next week if its positivity ratio climbs much higher.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have just updated their "COVID Community Level" map; to my complete lack of surprise, three counties in Massachusetts (Berkshire, Middlesex and Suffolk) are now in the "Medium" level. This is the first time since the CDC rolled out their "Community Level" back on February 25 that Middlesex County has had anything other than a "Low" level; I'm guessing it won't be anywhere near the last. The CDC still doesn't recommend masking at "Medium", although they do state
The town of Acton's current Google Data Studio dashboard is currently displaying a "Data Set Configuration Error" message and 2,949 cumulative cases; the "Data Set Configuration Error" message has been displayed since April 12. In the most recent "newsflash style update" at 7PM on December 21, 2021, the town reported 1538 cumulative cases with 89 individuals in isolation, 1417 recovered and 32 fatalities.

If you are at high risk for severe illness, talk to your healthcare provider about whether you need to wear a mask and take other precautionsGee, that's really helpful. And I'm sure that'll do wonders for keeping local hospitals from being overrun with COVID patients again. </sarcasm>
