As of 4PM today, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is reporting 19 newly reported confirmed deaths (11 less than yesterday - down 36.7%) for a total of 9,608 deaths, 968 newly reported confirmed cases (18 less than yesterday - down 1.8%) for a total of 144,895 cases, and 15,761 new patients tested by molecular tests (2,205 less than yesterday - down 12.3%) for a total of 2,595,974 individuals tested. There were 74,082 new molecular tests reported (590 less than yesterday - down 0.8%) with a total of 5,515,148 molecular tests administered to date. The ratio of newly confirmed cases to individuals tested by molecular test is 6.1%, compared to 5.5% yesterday. The state also reported 1 newly reported probable death (1 more than yesterday) for a total of 222 deaths, and 102 newly reported probable cases (39 more than yesterday - up 61.9%) for a total of 3,390 cases. The state also reported 281 patients tested by antibody tests (3 less than yesterday - down 1.1%) for a total of 125,399 patients, and 1,981 patients tested by antigen tests (182 more than yesterday - up 10.1%) for a total of 171,903 patients. Combining the confirmed and probable numbers gives 20 new deaths for a total of 9,830 and 1,070 new cases for a total of 148,285.

The seven day average number of newly confirmed cases per day is 791.7 compared to 620.3 last week (up 27.6%) and 542.4 two weeks ago (up 46.0%). The seven day average number of newly confirmed deaths per day is 18.0 compared to 17.1 last week (up 5.0%) and 12.4 two weeks ago (up 44.8%). The seven day average number of newly tested individuals per day is 15,617.7 compared to 15,179.7 last week (up 2.9%) and 15,225.7 two weeks ago (up 2.6%). The seven day average percentage of individuals coming back confirmed positive per day is 5.1% compared to 4.1% last week and 3.6% two weeks ago. (The above averages are calculated from today's raw data download.)

Of the Commonwealth's four "key metrics" listed on page 2 of the report, the seven-day weighted average positive test rate is 1.4%, 82% above the lowest observed value of 0.8% on September 21. The three-day average number of COVID-19 patients in hospital is 537, 78% above the lowest observed value of 302 on August 29. The number of hospitals using surge capacity is 2, 2 above the lowest observed value of 0 on October 18. The three-day average number of COVID-19 deaths is 17, 79% above the lowest observed value of 9 on September 7.

Well, today's numbers aren't quite as bad as yesterday, so that's something - but not much of something. Day-to-day confirmed deaths are down, as are confirmed cases (barely, but they're down). But the seven-day death and case averages are still worse than a couple of weeks ago (cases being way worse), and the state's key metrics aren't doing any better.

Wear masks, people.

The town of Acton has yet to post an update today. As of the most recent report at 6:25PM on October 21, the town of Acton reported 224 cumulative cases of COVID-19 in town with 8 individuals in isolation, 194 recovered and 21 fatalities.
