Local COVID-19 updates
Oct. 11th, 2020 04:27 pmAs of 4PM today, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is reporting 16 newly reported confirmed deaths (6 more than yesterday - up 60.0%) for a total of 9,388 deaths, 570 newly reported confirmed cases (17 less than yesterday - down 2.9%) for a total of 136,168 cases, and 15,797 new patients tested by molecular tests (637 more than yesterday - up 4.2%) for a total of 2,411,349 individuals tested. There were 77,246 new molecular tests reported (7,922 more than yesterday - up 11.4%) with a total of 4,748,004 molecular tests administered to date. The ratio of newly confirmed cases to individuals tested by molecular test is 3.6%, compared to 3.9% yesterday. The state also reported 1 newly reported probable death (1 more than yesterday) for a total of 216 deaths, and zero newly reported probable cases (52 less than yesterday) for a total of 2,735 cases. The state also reported 188 patients tested by antibody tests (26 less than yesterday - down 12.1%) for a total of 122,843 patients, and 775 patients tested by antigen tests (1,636 less than yesterday - down 67.9%) for a total of 150,341 patients. Combining the confirmed and probable numbers gives 17 new deaths for a total of 9,604 and 570 new cases for a total of 138,903.
The seven day average number of newly confirmed cases per day is 532.6 compared to 573.4 last week (down 7.1%) and 421.0 two weeks ago (up 26.5%). The seven day average number of newly confirmed deaths per day is 13.3 compared to 14.9 last week (down 10.6%) and 13.0 two weeks ago (up 2.2%). The seven day average number of newly tested individuals per day is 14,963.3 compared to 16,283.0 last week (down 8.1%) and 15,343.6 two weeks ago (down 2.5%). The seven day average percentage of individuals coming back confirmed positive per day is 3.6% compared to 3.5% last week and 2.7% two weeks ago. (The above averages are calculated from today's raw data download.)
Of the Commonwealth's four "key metrics" listed on page 2 of the report, the seven-day weighted average positive test rate is 1.0%, 33% above the lowest observed value of 0.8% on September 21. The three-day average number of COVID-19 patients in hospital is 514, 70% above the lowest observed value of 302 on August 29. The number of hospitals using surge capacity is 2, 2 above the lowest observed value of 0 on September 5. The three-day average number of COVID-19 deaths is 11, 14% above the lowest observed value of 9 on September 7.
It's the weekend, so I'm not terribly surprised at day-to-day noisiness; deaths (both confirmed and probable) are up while cases (both confirmed and probable) are down, and the new-cases-to-new-people-tested ratio dropped a bit. The seven-day averages aren't as encouraging; both deaths and cases are down from last week but up from two weeks ago, while case rates are way up from early September (back on September 4, for example, the seven day new cases average was 307.1). The continuing upward trend in the three-day average number of COVID-19 patients in hospital is also worrisome.
The town of Acton has yet to post an update today. As of the most recent report at 9:15AM on October 7, the town of Acton reported 212 cumulative cases of COVID-19 in town with 3 individuals in isolation, 188 recovered and 21 fatalities.
