Local COVID-19 updates
Sep. 27th, 2020 05:57 pmAs of 4PM today, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is reporting 13 newly reported confirmed deaths (5 less than yesterday - down 27.8%) for a total of 9,191 deaths, 594 newly reported confirmed cases (79 more than yesterday - up 15.3%) for a total of 128,426 cases, and 18,065 new patients tested by molecular tests (3,755 more than yesterday - up 26.2%) for a total of 2,192,625 individuals tested, with a total of 3,881,846 molecular tests administered to date. The ratio of newly confirmed cases to individuals tested by molecular test is 3.3%, compared to 3.6% yesterday. The state also reported zero newly reported probable deaths (same as yesterday) for a total of 213 deaths, and zero newly reported probable cases (54 less than yesterday) for a total of 2,216 cases. The state also reported 242 patients tested by antibody tests (2 less than yesterday - down 0.8%) for a total of 119,935 patients, and 546 patients tested by antigen tests (946 less than yesterday - down 63.4%) for a total of 126,585 patients. Combining the confirmed and probable numbers gives 13 new deaths for a total of 9,404 and 594 new cases for a total of 130,642.
The seven day average number of newly confirmed cases per day is 421.0 compared to 367.9 last week (up 14.4%) and 297.1 two weeks ago (up 41.7%). The seven day average number of newly confirmed deaths per day is 13.0 compared to 14.1 last week (down 8.1%) and 12.0 two weeks ago (up 8.3%). The seven day average number of molecular tests per day is 15,343.6 compared to 18,455.3 last week (down 16.9%) and 14,052.7 two weeks ago (up 9.2%). The seven day average percentage of tests coming back positive per day is 2.7% compared to 2.0% last week and 2.1% two weeks ago. (The above averages are calculated from today's raw data download.)
Of the Commonwealth's four "key metrics" listed on page 2 of the report, the seven-day weighted average positive test rate is 0.8%, 9% above the lowest observed value of 0.8% on September 21. The three-day average number of COVID-19 patients in hospital is 384, 27% above the lowest observed value of 302 on August 29. The number of hospitals using surge capacity is 2, 2 above the lowest observed value of 0 on September 5. The three-day average number of COVID-19 deaths is 10, 7% above the lowest observed value of 9 on September 7.
Day-to-day confirmed deaths are down, which is nice (but it's the weekend). However, confirmed cases are up despite it being the weekend; at least the test counts are also up, which brings the percentage of people coming back positive down a bit. Still, that ratio is over three percent for the first time since June 12 (by my admittedly unofficial calculations), and that's not good at all. The seven-day rolling averages for new confirmed cases and tests coming back positive are also still inexorably trending upward.
The town of Acton has yet to post an update today. As of the most recent report at 11:15AM on September 22, the town of Acton reported 203 cumulative cases of COVID-19 in town with 2 individuals in isolation, 180 recovered and 21 fatalities.
