Local COVID-19 updates
Sep. 26th, 2020 05:48 pmAs of 4PM today, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is reporting 18 newly reported confirmed deaths (8 more than yesterday - up 80.0%) for a total of 9,178 deaths, 515 newly reported confirmed cases (61 more than yesterday - up 13.4%) for a total of 127,832 cases, and 14,310 new patients tested by molecular tests (1,544 less than yesterday - down 9.7%) for a total of 2,174,560 individuals tested, with a total of 3,780,020 molecular tests administered to date. The ratio of newly confirmed cases to individuals tested by molecular test is 3.6%, compared to 2.9% yesterday. The state also reported zero newly reported probable deaths (1 less than yesterday) for a total of 213 deaths, and 54 newly reported probable cases (20 more than yesterday - up 58.8%) for a total of 2,218 cases. The state also reported 244 patients tested by antibody tests (41 less than yesterday - down 14.4%) for a total of 119,693 patients, and 1,492 patients tested by antigen tests (101 less than yesterday - down 6.3%) for a total of 126,039 patients. Combining the confirmed and probable numbers gives 18 new deaths for a total of 9,391 and 569 new cases for a total of 130,050.
The seven day average number of newly confirmed cases per day is 384.7 compared to 357.4 last week (up 7.6%) and 311.9 two weeks ago (up 23.4%). The seven day average number of newly confirmed deaths per day is 13.3 compared to 14.0 last week (down 5.1%) and 11.4 two weeks ago (up 16.3%). The seven day average number of molecular tests per day is 15,248.4 compared to 17,698.6 last week (down 13.8%) and 14,856.9 two weeks ago (up 2.6%). The seven day average percentage of tests coming back positive per day is 2.5% compared to 2.1% last week and 2.1% two weeks ago. (The above averages are calculated from today's raw data download.)
Of the Commonwealth's four "key metrics" listed on page 2 of the report, the seven-day weighted average positive test rate is 0.9%, 12% above the lowest observed value of 0.8% on September 21. The three-day average number of COVID-19 patients in hospital is 373, 23% above the lowest observed value of 302 on August 29. The number of hospitals using surge capacity is 2, 2 above the lowest observed value of 0 on September 5. The three-day average number of COVID-19 deaths is 11, 21% above the lowest observed value of 9 on September 7.
Holy shit, this looks bad. Day-to-day, confirmed deaths are way up, confirmed cases are noticeably up and molecular tests are actually down. That drives the percentage of folks coming back positive way, way up, which is very scary indeed. At least the seven-day rolling average of deaths is down from last week, but the cases are continuing to rise, as is that percent-positive ratio. Even the state's much rosier ratio (based on total tests, not numbers of people) is up from its lows of earlier this week.
The town of Acton has yet to post an update today. As of the most recent report at 11:15AM on September 22, the town of Acton reported 203 cumulative cases of COVID-19 in town with 2 individuals in isolation, 180 recovered and 21 fatalities.
