Local COVID-19 updates
Sep. 17th, 2020 04:22 pmAs of 4PM today, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is reporting 15 newly reported confirmed deaths (5 less than yesterday - down 25.0%) for a total of 9,051 deaths, 419 newly reported confirmed cases (124 more than yesterday - up 42.0%) for a total of 124,139 cases, and 27,644 new patients tested by molecular tests (11,012 more than yesterday - up 66.2%) for a total of 2,024,306 individuals tested, with a total of 3,199,563 molecular tests administered to date. The ratio of newly confirmed cases to individuals tested by molecular test is 1.5%, compared to 1.8% yesterday. The state also reported zero newly reported probable deaths (same as yesterday) for a total of 209 deaths, and 10 newly reported probable cases (1 less than yesterday - down 9.1%) for a total of 1,989 cases. The state also reported 346 patients tested by antibody tests (9 less than yesterday - down 2.5%) for a total of 117,453 patients, and 1,451 patients tested by antigen tests (94 less than yesterday - down 6.1%) for a total of 113,845 patients. Combining the confirmed and probable numbers gives 15 new deaths for a total of 9,260 and 429 new cases for a total of 126,128.
The seven day average number of newly confirmed cases per day is 340.0 compared to 277.1 last week (up 22.7%) and 338.4 two weeks ago (up 0.5%). The seven day average number of newly confirmed deaths per day is 13.4 compared to 12.4 last week (up 8.0%) and 13.6 two weeks ago (down 1.1%). The seven day average number of molecular tests per day is 16,870.6 compared to 14,946.7 last week (up 12.9%) and 21,678.4 two weeks ago (down 22.2%). The seven day average percentage of tests coming back positive per day is 2.1% compared to 1.9% last week and 1.6% two weeks ago. (The above averages are calculated from today's raw data download.)
Of the Commonwealth's four "key metrics" listed on page 2 of the report, the seven-day weighted average positive test rate is 0.8%, 0% above the lowest observed value of 0.8% on September 16. The three-day average number of COVID-19 patients in hospital is 346, 15% above the lowest observed value of 302 on August 29. The number of hospitals using surge capacity is 2, 2 above the lowest observed value of 0 on September 5. The three-day average number of COVID-19 deaths is 11, 19% above the lowest observed value of 9 on September 7.
Day-to-day deaths down again (yay!), cases up lots (boo!) but tests up lots more (yay!) driving the percent-positive ratio down (yay!). The seven-day averages are not so good looking; cases and deaths are both ticking upward, as is the percent-positive ratio; while tests are up compared to last week, they're still down compared to a couple of weeks ago. Also not cheerful: the state's "key metric" for patients in hospital is on a definite upward trajectory.
Oh, and the state has now tested more than two million individuals using molecular tests, out of the state's total population of around 6.9 million. Yay?
The town of Acton has yet to post an update today. As of the most recent report at 3:45PM on September 16, the town of Acton reported 202 cumulative cases of COVID-19 in town with 2 individuals in isolation, 179 recovered and 21 fatalities.
