Local COVID-19 updates
Sep. 13th, 2020 04:10 pmAs of 4PM today, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is reporting 14 newly reported confirmed deaths (2 less than yesterday - down 12.5%) for a total of 9,001 deaths, 267 newly reported confirmed cases (168 less than yesterday - down 38.6%) for a total of 122,904 cases, and 12,102 new patients tested by molecular tests (6,211 less than yesterday - down 33.9%) for a total of 1,956,033 individuals tested, with a total of 3,006,158 molecular tests administered to date. The ratio of newly confirmed cases to individuals tested by molecular test is 2.2%, compared to 2.4% yesterday. The state also reported zero newly reported probable deaths (same as yesterday) for a total of 209 deaths, and 19 newly reported probable cases (100 less than yesterday - down 84.0%) for a total of 1,922 cases. The state also reported 289 patients tested by antibody tests (60 less than yesterday - down 17.2%) for a total of 116,531 patients, and 2,095 patients tested by antigen tests (4,140 less than yesterday - down 66.4%) for a total of 108,478 patients. Combining the confirmed and probable numbers gives 14 new deaths for a total of 9,210 and 286 new cases for a total of 124,826.
The seven day average number of newly confirmed cases per day is 297.1 compared to 334.4 last week (down 11.1%) and 376.1 two weeks ago (down 21.0%). The seven day average number of newly confirmed deaths per day is 12.0 compared to 14.4 last week (down 16.8%) and 18.0 two weeks ago (down 33.3%). The seven day average number of molecular tests per day is 14,052.7 compared to 20,519.4 last week (down 31.5%) and 24,266.4 two weeks ago (down 42.1%). The seven day average percentage of tests coming back positive per day is 2.1% compared to 1.7% last week and 1.5% two weeks ago. (The above averages are calculated from today's raw data download.)
Of the Commonwealth's four "key metrics" listed on page 2 of the report, the seven-day weighted average positive test rate is 0.8%, 0% above the lowest observed value of 0.8% on September 12. The three-day average number of COVID-19 patients in hospital is 325, 7% above the lowest observed value of 302 on August 29. The number of hospitals using surge capacity is 1, 1 above the lowest observed value of 0 on September 5. The three-day average number of COVID-19 deaths is 15, 63% above the lowest observed value of 9 on September 7.
I would be much happier about the day-to-day drop in cases and deaths if it wasn't the weekend, which typically sees less reporting in general. The day-to-day drop in percent-positive rate is somewhat encouraging, however; as are the downward trends in the seven-day averages of deaths and cases. The continued upward trend in the seven-day percent-positive averages is, on the other hand, quite discouraging.
Oh, and the state has now passed the three-million-test milestone - and, in grimmer news, the nine-thousand confirmed dead milestone.
The town of Acton has yet to post an update today. As of the most recent report at 8AM on September 9, the town of Acton reported 200 cumulative cases of COVID-19 in town with 3 individuals in isolation, 176 recovered and 21 fatalities.
