As of 4PM today, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is reporting 16 newly reported confirmed deaths (2 more than yesterday - up 14.3%) for a total of 8,987 deaths, 435 newly reported confirmed cases (8 less than yesterday - down 1.8%) for a total of 122,637 cases, and 18,313 new patients tested by molecular tests (1,093 less than yesterday - down 5.6%) for a total of 1,943,931 individuals tested, with a total of 2,968,723 molecular tests administered to date. The ratio of newly confirmed cases to individuals tested by molecular test is 2.4%, compared to 2.3% yesterday. The state also reported zero newly reported probable deaths (same as yesterday) for a total of 209 deaths, and 119 newly reported probable cases (119 more than yesterday) for a total of 1,903 cases. The state also reported 349 patients tested by antibody tests (34 more than yesterday - up 10.8%) for a total of 116,242 patients, and 6,235 patients tested by antigen tests (3,935 more than yesterday - up 171.1%) for a total of 106,383 patients. Combining the confirmed and probable numbers gives 16 new deaths for a total of 9,196 and 554 new cases for a total of 124,540.

The seven day average number of newly confirmed cases per day is 311.9 compared to 306.4 last week (up 1.8%) and 409.8 two weeks ago (down 23.9%). The seven day average number of newly confirmed deaths per day is 11.4 compared to 14.9 last week (down 23.1%) and 18.8 two weeks ago (down 39.3%). The seven day average number of molecular tests per day is 14,856.9 compared to 20,357.0 last week (down 27.0%) and 25,545.2 two weeks ago (down 41.8%). The seven day average percentage of tests coming back positive per day is 2.1% compared to 1.5% last week and 1.6% two weeks ago. (The above averages are calculated from today's raw data download.)

Of the Commonwealth's four "key metrics" listed on page 2 of the report, the seven-day weighted average positive test rate is 0.8%, 0% above the lowest observed value of 0.8% on September 11. The three-day average number of COVID-19 patients in hospital is 339, 12% above the lowest observed value of 302 on August 29. The number of hospitals using surge capacity is 2, 2 above the lowest observed value of 0 on September 5. The three-day average number of COVID-19 deaths is 11, 26% above the lowest observed value of 9 on September 7.

Yeesh. Confirmed cases down a tad on a day-to-day basis, but tests down proportionally more, so up goes the ratio of new cases to tests - again. The upward tick in deaths isn't good; neither is the jump in probable cases. The seven-day average deaths continue to trend downward, but the cases are starting to tick upward and the percent-positive is on a sustained upward trajectory. And today's news includes word of COVID-19 outbreaks at Boston College and on the island of Nantucket.

Bad, overall. Wear a mask, people.

The town of Acton has yet to post an update today. As of the most recent report at 8AM on September 9, the town of Acton reported 200 cumulative cases of COVID-19 in town with 3 individuals in isolation, 176 recovered and 21 fatalities.
