Local COVID-19 updates
Aug. 30th, 2020 04:22 pmAs of 4PM today, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is reporting 13 newly reported confirmed deaths (1 more than yesterday - up 8.3%) for a total of 8,816 deaths, 174 newly reported confirmed cases (247 less than yesterday - down 58.7%) for a total of 118,483 cases, and 16,594 new patients tested by molecular tests (7,288 less than yesterday - down 30.5%) for a total of 1,714,028 individuals tested, with a total of 2,372,564 molecular tests administered to date. The ratio of newly confirmed cases to individuals tested by molecular test is 1.0%, compared to 1.8% yesterday. The state also reported 139 patients tested by antibody tests (747 less than yesterday - down 84.3%) for a total of 112,603 and 1,162 patients tested by antigen tests (316 less than yesterday - down 21.4%) for a total of 86,612.
The seven day average number of newly confirmed cases per day is 376.1 compared to 242.0 last week (up 55.4%) and 277.0 two weeks ago (up 35.8%). The seven day average number of newly confirmed deaths per day is 18.0 compared to 13.8 last week (up 30.1%) and 13.3 two weeks ago (up 35.5%). The seven day average number of molecular tests per day is 24,266.4 compared to 17,166.2 last week (up 41.4%) and 18,544.0 two weeks ago (up 30.9%). The seven day average percentage of tests coming back positive per day is 1.5% compared to 1.4% last week and 1.6% two weeks ago. (The above averages are calculated from today's raw data download.)
Of the Commonwealth's four "key metrics" listed on page 2 of the report, the seven-day weighted average positive test rate is 0.9%, 0% above the lowest observed value of 0.9% on August 29. The three-day average number of COVID-19 patients in hospital is 302, 0% above the lowest observed value of 302 on August 29. The number of hospitals using surge capacity is 1, 1 above the lowest observed value of 0 on August 9. The three-day average number of COVID-19 deaths is 12, 16% above the lowest observed value of 11 on August 4.
One more death today than yesterday, which is bad. Tests down day-to-day, which is bad but unsurprising, since it's the weekend; cases also down day-to-day, which is good but unsurprising (because weekend); the actually good news is the drop in percent-positive rate. The state's "key metrics" are also all trending nicely; in fact, we had the "lowest observed values" for both the seven-day weighted average of positive molecular test rate and the three-day average of number of COVID-19 patients in hospital. However, the seven-day rolling averages are not looking good; cases and deaths are both still trending higher, and I'm not seeing anyone mention this in the mass media yet.
The town of Acton has yet to post an update today. As of the most recent report at 3:30PM on August 24, the town of Acton reported 195 cumulative cases of COVID-19 in town with 6 individuals in isolation, 168 recovered and 21 fatalities.
