Local COVID-19 updates
Aug. 29th, 2020 05:28 pmAs of 4PM [1] today, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is reporting 12 newly reported confirmed deaths (4 less than yesterday - down 25.0%) for a total of 8,803 deaths, 421 newly reported confirmed cases (17 less than yesterday - down 3.9%) for a total of 118,309 cases, and 23,882 new patients tested by molecular tests (166 more than yesterday - up 0.7%) for a total of 1,697,434 individuals tested, with a total of 2,339,669 molecular tests administered to date. The ratio of newly confirmed cases to individuals tested by molecular test is 1.8%, compared to 1.8% yesterday. The state also reported 886 patients tested by antibody tests (456 more than yesterday - up 106.0%) for a total of 112,464 and 1,478 patients tested by antigen tests (79 more than yesterday - up 5.6%) for a total of 85,450.
The seven day average number of newly confirmed cases per day is 409.8 compared to 250.7 last week (up 63.5%) and 274.6 two weeks ago (up 49.3%). The seven day average number of newly confirmed deaths per day is 18.8 compared to 13.4 last week (up 40.2%) and 13.7 two weeks ago (up 37.3%). The seven day average number of molecular tests per day is 25,545.2 compared to 16,923.4 last week (up 50.9%) and 18,784.7 two weeks ago (up 36.0%). The seven day average percentage of tests coming back positive per day is 1.6% compared to 1.5% last week and 1.5% two weeks ago. (The above averages are calculated from today's raw data download.)
The day-to-day changes are mostly to the good, for once; deaths and cases down while tests are (barely) up and the percent-positive ratio is holding steady. However, day-to-day numbers are noisy as heck, and it's the weekend which makes things even noisier. The seven-day averages are all trending badly; the exception being the molecular test counts, where the more the merrier.
Starting today, I'm adding the four "key metrics" that the Commonwealth includes on page two of the daily report; supposedly, these are the numbers that the governor uses to decide if and/or when to move through the state's reopening plan. Of those four "key metrics", the seven-day weighted average positive test rate is 1.0%, 1% above the lowest observed value of 1.0% on August 27. The three-day average number of COVID-19 patients in hospital is 317, 1% above the lowest observed value of 313 on August 23. The number of hospitals using surge capacity is 3, 3 above the lowest observed value of 0 on August 9. The three-day average number of COVID-19 deaths is 14, 28% above the lowest observed value of 11 on August 4.
The town of Acton has yet to post an update today. As of the most recent report at 3:30PM on August 24, the town of Acton reported 195 cumulative cases of COVID-19 in town with 6 individuals in isolation, 168 recovered and 21 fatalities.
[1] Actually, as of around 5:15PM. The data wasn't available at four, for whatever reason.
