Local (and local-ish) COVID-19 updates
Jul. 14th, 2020 05:48 pmAs of 4PM today, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is reporting 10 newly reported confirmed COVID-19 deaths (for a total of 8,125), 203 newly reported confirmed cases (for a total of 105,986), and 11,971 new patients tested by molecular tests (for a total of 972,070), with a total of 1,241,465 molecular tests administered to date. The ratio of newly confirmed cases to individuals tested by molecular test is 1.7%. The state also reported zero newly reported probable deaths (for a total of 215), 100 newly reported probable cases (for a total of 6,144), and 637 patients tested by antibody tests (for a total of 81,525). Combining the confirmed and probable numbers gives 10 new deaths (for a total of 8,340) and 303 new cases (for a total of 112,130).
Unsurprisingly, given that today's a Tuesday (and thus not a weekend or day-after-weekend day), the number of tests are up; alas, so are the case and death counts. The percent-positive ratio did tick down slightly from yesterday, which is nice. Still, we're not seeing sustained drops in cases on a week-by-week basis, and that's concerning. Last Tuesday, we had 140 new cases and 15 deaths; two weeks ago, there were 73 new cases and no deaths.
Happily, there is some good news on the vaccine front: early trials of one particular candidate showed that it did stimulate neutralizing antibodies:

A small price, indeed - if it works. OTOH, if it (or any of the other candidates out there) are shown to be safe and effective? Sign my ass up.
The town of Acton has yet to post an update today. As of the most recent report at 5:30PM on July 9, the town reported 178 cumulative cases of COVID-19 with 5 individuals in isolation, 152 recovered and 21 fatalities.
