Local (and not-so-local) COVID-19 updates
Jun. 21st, 2020 10:01 pmAs of 4PM today, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is reporting 30 newly reported confirmed COVID-19 deaths (for a total of 7,677 confirmed deaths), 105 newly reported confirmed cases (for a total of 102,333) and 8,363 new patients tested by molecular tests (for a total of 768,592), with a total of 966,551 molecular tests administered to date. The ratio of newly confirmed cases to individuals tested by molecular test is 1.3%. The state also reported zero newly reported probable deaths (for a total of 181), 20 newly reported probable cases (for a total of 4,728), and 530 patients tested by antibody tests (for a total of 64,266). In total, the state reported 30 new deaths (for a total of 7,858) and 125 new cases (for a total of 107,061).
It's good to see cases continuing to go down, and even better to see the percent-positive test rate continue to go down. But it's bad to see daily deaths going up. Thirty deaths a day is a lot better than the 252 deaths back on April 29, but that's still nearly a thousand deaths per month from COVID-19.
And things outside of Massachusetts aren't necessarily any better. The World Health Organization's global case count had its highest ever one-day jump yesterday, with 183,020 new cases and 4,743 deaths worldwide; the global totals currently stand at 8,708,008 cases and 461,715 deaths. Oklahoma set another new record for daily cases (478) yesterday; Florida is about to hit 100,000 cases and is seeing nearly 12% of its tests coming back positive. Arizona just passed 50,000 cases, with new records not just for new cases but for hospitalization, ICU and ventilator usage rates.
The town of Acton has once gain failed to post an update today. The most recent report, dated 6:30PM on Wednesday 6/17, was of 172 cumulative cases with 2 individuals in isolation, 149 persons recovered and 21 fatalities.
