So I wonder. Will John McCain try to bring up his William Ayers talking points in tonight's debate? And if he does, what will Barack Obama's counterpunch be?

Will Obama talk about how the American people aren't particularly interested in ancient dirt when the economy is tanking? Or will he mention McCain's history as part of the Keating Five, or Sarah Palin's ties to the secessionist Alaska Independence Party, or how McCain's transition chief was a lobbyist for Saddam Hussein, or some other one of McCain's many weaknesses?

We'll soon find out ...

Joe the plumber is an interesting tack.

Of course, when McCain asked what Joe's "fine" would be (if he were a small business owner who didn't provide health insurance to his employees) and Obama (correctly) answered "Zero" - well, that took the wind out of the Joe-the-plumber sails.

Once the transcript gets posted, I want to check something - McCain, at one point, talked about "gold plated" policies. I could have sworn that he claimed transplant coverage was "gold plated". If he actually said that, he's even more out to lunch than I've thought.

Could he have meant hair transplants? he made a joke about him needing them during his walk in the last debate.

The "zero" response was long overdue.

I actually think McCain had a stronger debate than he has had - the "if you wanted to run against George Bush, you should have run 4 years ago" line was good.

And I really wish Obama would have said "look, I can't say what will get cut, cause it's more complicated than that" to the early question - I felt he was talking around it and he didn't need to. It lent some credence to the McCain insinuation that eloquence = tricky.

I don't think anything will change - for this debate to make McCain president, Obama would have had to pull a knife or swear allegiance to Osama bin Laden, or McCain would have had to find the Templar treasure and balance the budget or something. Nothing like that happened, so in 3 weeks, we'll be electing our first black president (unless something like that does happen in that period of time, of course)
