Well, I've got my wall-o-text builder (mostly) working with the new data format. Now all we need is some good news...

As of 5PM today, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is reporting 63 newly reported confirmed deaths (3 more than yesterday - up 5.0%) for a total of 12,464 deaths, 4,178 newly reported confirmed cases (180 less than yesterday - down 4.1%) for a total of 379,633 cases, and 59,718 newly reported molecular tests (4,148 more than yesterday - up 7.5%). The seven day average positivity rate is 8.57%, compared to 8.50% yesterday. Excluding higher education, the seven day average positivity rate is 9.37%, compared to 9.22% yesterday. The number of estimated active cases was 79,406 (2,043 less than yesterday - down 2.5%). The state also reported zero newly reported probable deaths (1 less than yesterday) for a total of 270 and 456 newly reported probable cases (92 less than yesterday - down 16.8%) for a total of 17,569. Combining the confirmed and probable numbers gives 63 new deaths for a total of 12,734 and 4,634 new cases for a total of 397,202. There were 2,428 COVID-19 patients in hospital (89 more than yesterday - up 3.8%), 425 COVID-19 patients in ICUs (2 more than yesterday - up 0.5%) and 264 COVID-19 patients on ventilators (intubated) (6 more than yesterday - up 2.3%).

Of the Commonwealth's four "key metrics" listed on page 2 of the report, the 7-day average of newly confirmed cases is 3,271 (595 less than yesterday - down 15.4%), 1,983% above the lowest observed value of 157 on July 4 and 32% below the highest observed value of 4,778 on December 7. The 7-day weighted average of positive molecular test rate is 8.6% (0 more than yesterday - up 0.8%), 1,012% above the lowest observed value of 0.8% on September 21 and 69% below the highest observed value of 27.7% on April 15. The 7-day average number of COVID-19 patients in hospital is 2,311 (28 more than yesterday - up 1.2%), 1,390% above the lowest observed value of 155 on August 26 and 41% below the highest observed value of 3,874 on April 27. The 7-day average number of COVID-19 deaths is 59 (1 more than yesterday - up 1.7%), 436% above the lowest observed value of 11 on September 9 and 67% below the highest observed value of 175 on April 24.

Statewide, hospitals reported 9,254 non-ICU beds, of which 5,977 (65%) were occupied by non-COVID patients, 2,003 (22%) were occupied by COVID patients, and 1,274 (14%) remained available. Hospitals also reported 1,458 ICU beds, of which 673 (46%) were occupied by non-COVID patients, 425 (29%) were occupied by COVID patients, and 360 (25%) remained available. By comparison, yesterday hospitals reported 9,229 non-ICU beds, of which 5,762 (62%) were occupied by non-COVID patients, 1,916 (21%) were occupied by COVID patients, and 1,551 (17%) remained available. Yesterday, hospitals also reported 1,478 ICU beds, of which 674 (46%) were occupied by non-COVID patients, 423 (29%) were occupied by COVID patients, and 381 (26%) remained available.

Two weeks ago, the 7 day confirmed case average was 3,068, the 7 day confirmed deaths average was 44, the 7 day hospitalization average was 1,920, and the 7 day weighted average positivity rate was 6.0% (or 7.48% excluding higher education).

The raw data file used to create this report is available here.

Day-to-day, cases are down which is always nice, but deaths and (more scarily) percent-positive are up, which are bad. Also bad is the continued rise in hospitalization counts, and the concurrent drops in availabilty of hospital beds.

I must confess that the new interactive dashboard has some nice features; I particularly like how the user can actually see the definitions of these different numbers. It's also nice that the "overview trends" section shows information since the beginning of the pandemic. I do not like what appears to be a complete lack of versioning, especially for the front page values - I've yet to figure out if there's a way to have a URL to the report as of a specific date.

The town of Acton's current Google Data Studio dashboard is showing 41 active and 557 cumulative cases as of January 5. The most recent "newsflash style update" at 9PM on December 15 reported 433 cumulative cases with 63 individuals in isolation, 345 persons recovered and 25 fatalities.
