As of 4PM today, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is reporting 8 newly reported confirmed deaths (11 less than yesterday - down 57.9%) for a total of 9,350 deaths, 409 newly reported confirmed cases (100 less than yesterday - down 19.6%) for a total of 134,277 cases, and 14,035 new patients tested by molecular tests (2,099 less than yesterday - down 13.0%) for a total of 2,360,825 individuals tested. There were 63,385 new molecular tests reported (1,682 more than yesterday - up 2.7%) with a total of 4,541,516 molecular tests administered to date. The ratio of newly confirmed cases to individuals tested by molecular test is 2.9%, compared to 3.2% yesterday. The state also reported zero newly reported probable deaths (same as yesterday) for a total of 215 deaths, and 35 newly reported probable cases (9 more than yesterday - up 34.6%) for a total of 2,659 cases. The state also reported 181 patients tested by antibody tests (105 less than yesterday - down 36.7%) for a total of 122,087 patients, and 2,137 patients tested by antigen tests (550 more than yesterday - up 34.7%) for a total of 145,573 patients. Combining the confirmed and probable numbers gives 8 new deaths for a total of 9,565 and 444 new cases for a total of 136,936.
The seven day average number of newly confirmed cases per day is 545.1 compared to 514.0 last week (up 6.1%) and 389.1 two weeks ago (up 40.1%). The seven day average number of newly confirmed deaths per day is 12.1 compared to 16.4 last week (down 26.1%) and 14.1 two weeks ago (down 14.1%). The seven day average number of newly tested individuals per day is 15,494.9 compared to 15,423.6 last week (up 0.5%) and 17,155.7 two weeks ago (down 9.7%). The seven day average percentage of individuals coming back confirmed positive per day is 3.6% compared to 3.3% last week and 2.2% two weeks ago. (The above averages are calculated from today's raw data download.)
Of the Commonwealth's four "key metrics" listed on page 2 of the report, the seven-day weighted average positive test rate is 1.0%, 34% above the lowest observed value of 0.8% on September 21. The three-day average number of COVID-19 patients in hospital is 498, 65% above the lowest observed value of 302 on August 29. The number of hospitals using surge capacity is 5, 5 above the lowest observed value of 0 on September 5. The three-day average number of COVID-19 deaths is 12, 29% above the lowest observed value of 9 on September 7.
On a day-by-day basis, this isn't actually bad. Deaths and (confirmed) cases are both down nicely; so are newly individuals tested, but the ratio also went down, which is definitely good news. The seven-day averages for confirmed cases and percent-positive, however, continues to climb, which is not good news at all, and the state's "key metrics" continue to be well above their lowest observed values, with little or no sign of improvement.
The town of Acton has yet to post an update today. As of the most recent report at 9:15AM on October 7, the town of Acton reported 212 cumulative cases of COVID-19 in town with 3 individuals in isolation, 188 recovered and 21 fatalities.
