As of 5PM today, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is reporting 21 newly reported confirmed deaths (8 more than yesterday - up 61.5%) for a total of 9,957 and 2,047 newly reported confirmed cases (863 more than yesterday - up 72.9%) for a total of 169,976. The seven day average positivity rate is 2.63%, compared to 2.53% yesterday. Excluding higher education, the seven day average positivity rate is 4.42%, compared to 4.28% yesterday. The number of estimated active cases was 23,702 (887 more than yesterday - up 3.9%). The state also reported zero newly reported probable deaths (1 less than yesterday) for a total of 227 and 107 newly reported confirmed cases (37 less than yesterday - down 25.7%) for a total of 4,905. Combining the confirmed and probable numbers gives 21 new deaths for a total of 10,184 and 2,154 new cases for a total of 174,881. There were 618 COVID-19 patients in hospital (30 more than yesterday - up 5.1%), 150 COVID-19 patients in ICUs (7 more than yesterday - up 4.9%) and 68 COVID-19 patients on ventilators (intubated) (2 more than yesterday - up 3.0%).

Of the Commonwealth's four "key metrics" listed on page 2 of the report, the 7-day average of newly confirmed cases is 1,407, 796% above the lowest observed value of 157 on July 4. The 7-day weighted average of positive molecular test rate is 2.6%, 240% above the lowest observed value of 0.8% on September 21. The 7-day average number of COVID-19 patients in hospital is 546, 252% above the lowest observed value of 155 on August 26. The 7-day average number of COVID-19 deaths is 18, 70% above the lowest observed value of 11 on September 9.

Day-to-day, this stinks. To be fair, yesterday's numbers were likely down due to weekend effects. However, everything continues on an upward trend, especially the hospitalization numbers. We're back over two thousand new cases per day, and the estimated total active case keeps going up (indicating that infected people aren't getting better faster than uninfected people are getting infected).

At least the Governor is getting ready to spin up field hospitals to treat COVID-19 patients if needed:

It's good to see the Governor trying to get ahead of the curve for once.
