Local COVID-19 updates
Oct. 9th, 2020 04:48 pmAs of 4PM today, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is reporting 12 newly reported confirmed deaths (4 more than yesterday - up 50.0%) for a total of 9,362 deaths, 734 newly reported confirmed cases (325 more than yesterday - up 79.5%) for a total of 135,011 cases, and 19,567 new patients tested by molecular tests (5,532 more than yesterday - up 39.4%) for a total of 2,380,392 individuals tested. There were 59,918 new molecular tests reported (3,467 less than yesterday - down 5.5%) with a total of 4,601,434 molecular tests administered to date. The ratio of newly confirmed cases to individuals tested by molecular test is 3.8%, compared to 2.9% yesterday. The state also reported zero newly reported probable deaths (same as yesterday) for a total of 215 deaths, and 31 newly reported probable cases (4 less than yesterday - down 11.4%) for a total of 2,690 cases. The state also reported 354 patients tested by antibody tests (173 more than yesterday - up 95.6%) for a total of 122,441 patients, and 1,582 patients tested by antigen tests (555 less than yesterday - down 26.0%) for a total of 147,155 patients. Combining the confirmed and probable numbers gives 12 new deaths for a total of 9,577 and 765 new cases for a total of 137,701.
The seven day average number of newly confirmed cases per day is 542.4 compared to 556.7 last week (down 2.6%) and 392.4 two weeks ago (up 38.2%). The seven day average number of newly confirmed deaths per day is 12.4 compared to 16.4 last week (down 24.3%) and 14.4 two weeks ago (down 13.9%). The seven day average number of newly tested individuals per day is 15,225.7 compared to 16,223.1 last week (down 6.1%) and 16,246.7 two weeks ago (down 6.3%). The seven day average percentage of individuals coming back confirmed positive per day is 3.6% compared to 3.4% last week and 2.3% two weeks ago. (The above averages are calculated from today's raw data download.)
Of the Commonwealth's four "key metrics" listed on page 2 of the report, the seven-day weighted average positive test rate is 1.1%, 45% above the lowest observed value of 0.8% on September 21. The three-day average number of COVID-19 patients in hospital is 500, 65% above the lowest observed value of 302 on August 29. The number of hospitals using surge capacity is 4, 4 above the lowest observed value of 0 on September 5. The three-day average number of COVID-19 deaths is 10, 4% above the lowest observed value of 9 on September 7.
Well, so much for good news. Day-to-day confirmed deaths and cases way up, newly tested patients up but not nearly so much, and thus percent-positive way, way up as well. The seven-day average for confirmed cases is actually down a tad from last week, but is still way up from early September. Average deaths are on a downward trend, which is good; but how long is that going to last, given the climbing case counts?
I learned today, courtesy of the Boston Globe, that the state's Department of Elementary and Secondary Education is now providing a weekly report on Thursdays, with COVID-19 case counts for most of the school districts in the state. (Not all, apparently, as not every district is actually reporting that information.) Students and staff are reported separately; students learning fully remotely are not included; neither are school staff who have not been in district buildings during the previous week). According to last Thursday's report, there were a total of 106 students and 57 staff statewide reported as positive for COVID-19 between October 1 and October 7. Of the districts serving my town of Acton, the Acton-Boxborough regional district reported one student and no staff; the Minuteman Vocational Technical (multi-town) district reported no students or staff.
The town of Acton has yet to post an update today. As of the most recent report at 9:15AM on October 7, the town of Acton reported 212 cumulative cases of COVID-19 in town with 3 individuals in isolation, 188 recovered and 21 fatalities.
