As of 4PM today, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is reporting 8 newly reported confirmed deaths (same as yesterday) for a total of 8,933 deaths, 168 newly reported confirmed cases (54 less than yesterday - down 24.3%) for a total of 121,214 cases, and 9,439 new patients tested by molecular tests (431 less than yesterday - down 4.4%) for a total of 1,876,973 individuals tested, with a total of 2,758,384 molecular tests administered to date. The ratio of newly confirmed cases to individuals tested by molecular test is 1.8%, compared to 2.2% yesterday. The state also reported zero newly reported probable deaths (same as yesterday) for a total of 208 deaths, and 3 newly reported probable cases (4 less than yesterday - down 57.1%) for a total of 1,748 cases. The state also reported 44 patients tested by antibody tests (28 less than yesterday - down 38.9%) for a total of 115,057 patients, and 1,763 patients tested by antigen tests (1,447 more than yesterday - up 457.9%) for a total of 94,986 patients. Combining the confirmed and probable numbers gives 8 new deaths for a total of 9,141 and 171 new cases for a total of 122,962.

The seven day average number of newly confirmed cases per day is 296.6 compared to 338.3 last week (down 12.3%) and 330.7 two weeks ago (down 10.3%). The seven day average number of newly confirmed deaths per day is 14.6 compared to 14.6 last week and 18.7 two weeks ago (down 21.9%). The seven day average number of molecular tests per day is 17,507.3 compared to 21,381.4 last week (down 18.1%) and 22,831.2 two weeks ago (down 23.3%). The seven day average percentage of tests coming back positive per day is 1.8% compared to 1.6% last week and 1.4% two weeks ago. (The above averages are calculated from today's raw data download.)

Of the Commonwealth's four "key metrics" listed on page 2 of the report, the seven-day weighted average positive test rate is 0.9%, 0% above the lowest observed value of 0.9% on September 7. The three-day average number of COVID-19 patients in hospital is 321, 6% above the lowest observed value of 302 on August 29. The number of hospitals using surge capacity is 2, 2 above the lowest observed value of 0 on September 5. The three-day average number of COVID-19 deaths is 8, 0% above the lowest observed value of 8 on September 5.

It's the first day after a long weekend, so I'm not too surprised by the day-to-day drops in cases and tests; the drop in percent-positive is nice to see, though. Seeing a drop in seven-day case trends compared to last week is encouraging, but we are coming off a three-day weekend, which probably depresses the counts more than usual. The steady climb in percent-positive over the last couple of weeks is not encouraging. The state's "key metrics" are mostly to the better, which I'm sure pleases Governor Baker no end.

The town of Acton has yet to post an update today. As of the most recent report at 3PM on August 31, the town of Acton reported 198 cumulative cases of COVID-19 in town with 4 individuals in isolation, 173 recovered and 21 fatalities.
