Local COVID-19 updates
Jul. 6th, 2020 06:28 pmAs of 4PM this afternoon, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is reporting ... a bunch of changes to their daily reports. Again.
Back on June 1, the state started including probable case and death information in their headline case and death counts, and displayed antibody test data alongside the molecular test data on the front page of the report. Now:
Anyway, today's numbers are 15 newly reported confirmed COVID-19 deaths (for a total of 7,983), 157 newly reported confirmed cases (for a total of 104,659), and 7,726 new patients tested by molecular tests (for a total of 893,939), with a total of 1,134,568 molecular tests administered to date. The ratio of newly confirmed cases to individuals tested by molecular test is 2.0%. The state also reported zero newly reported probable deaths (for a total of 215), 6 newly reported probable cases (for a total of 5,478), and 159 patients tested by antibody tests (for a total of 75,795). Combining the confirmed and probable numbers gives 15 new deaths (for a total of 8,198) and 163 new cases (for a total of 110,137).
Deaths and cases are both up, neither of which are good. Tests are also up, which is good, but the percent-positive rate is also up, which is bad. On the other hand, of the four key trends the state is tracking, the two hospitalization-based ones (three-day average COVID-19 patients in hospital and number of hospitals using surge capacity) are both down; only one hospital is reported as using surge capacity. The three-day average confirmed deaths is also down, which is good.
The town of Acton has yet to post an update today. As of the most recent report at 9:30PM on Sunday 6/28, the town reported 173 cumulative cases with 0 individuals in isolation, 152 persons recovered and 21 fatalities.

Please note: The front page of the dashboard has been reformatted. Starting today, 7/6, probable case and death information can be found on page 21. Antibody tests (individual and total numbers) can be found on page 7.The combined totals (confirmed plus probable) are no longer being formally reported (although they're easy enough to calculate, and I'll continue to do so.) Supposedly, the reason the state started including probable numbers in their counts was to conform to guidance from the Centers for Disease Control; I have yet to find a published reason why these combined numbers aren't being published anymore.
