My old school makes international news
Jul. 22nd, 2009 10:10 pmIn the lead paragraph of a story about education reform here in Massachusetts, the current issue of The Economist mentions my old high school:
Admittedly, they messed the name up slightly; it's the Concord-Carlisle Regional School District (with a dash, not a slash). Still, it's kind of cool to see my old school in the world news - especially for doing things well.
MASSACHUSETTS ranks at or near the top of national measures of how well schoolchildren do at reading and mathematics. A leader in early-years education, it is also applauded for its vocational, technical and agriculture schools. Still, there are problems. The disparity between students in affluent districts and those in low-income urban ones is shocking. In the Concord/Carlisle school district, for instance, 92% of students graduated from high-school on time and planned to attend a four-year college or university in 2007, compared with just 12.8% in Holyoke, one of the poorest cities in the state.(emphasis mine)
