I'm proud to be an American.
Not because I'm proud of all my countrymen, for I am not; far too many of them choose to act in manners that range from simply damnfoolish to overtly evil.
Not because I'm proud of all the actions of my nation, for I am not; our history is replete with mistakes and mistreatments.
Not because I'm proud of the current "leadership", for I am not; in fact, the current "leadership" is about as unworthy of pride as I can imagine.
I am proud to be an American, because the United States is a nation founded on splendid ideals, and because we keep on getting closer to those ideals. We didn't start out perfect; we'll never achieve perfection; but we'll keep getting better and better.
