Physical therapy won't be *pleasant* but there's been a change in attitude to the practitioners - when you leave, they want you to feel better than when you came in.

Now: when trying to restore function, they are more willing to bend that a bit, I'm sure. "Yes, I know this is uncomfortable, but if you want your leg back to normal, we have to go through this. Can you keep going?" But they are frequently including additional therapies intended for comfort, so that you doing view their sessions as torture.
