Local COVID-19 updates
As of 4PM this afternoon, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is reporting 208 more deaths from COVID-19 (for a total of 4,420 to date), 1,754 new cases (for a total of 72,025) and 6,290 more tests performed (for a total of 339,639). That case count puts Massachusetts at number 3 in the nation, behind only New York and New Jersey.
None of those headline numbers went the "right" way today (deaths and cases up; tests down). Nevertheless, Governor Baker said today that his "goal" is to start reopening "some" businesses on May 18, but only if the long-term trends continue to decline:
The governor's new order requiring everyone to wear masks in public whenever they can't maintain a six-foot social distance went into effect today.
Also coming out today was the state's weekly town-by-town report of cases and case rates; according to that report, Acton had 95 cases, with a rate of 400.30 cases/100k residents. The 72,025 cases reported statewide correspond to a rate of 1033.83 cases/100k residents.
The town of Acton has yet to post a report today. Yesterday's report listed 100 confirmed cases in town; 53 of those being "cases in isolation that are actively being monitored".

Governor Charlie Baker said Wednesday that state officials hope to reopen some businesses "in a limited fashion" within the next couple of weeks, but only if new coronavirus infections and hospitalizations continue to decline.
"Our goal, starting on May 18, is to begin reopening certain types of businesses in a limited fashion where it can be done more safely than under normal operations," he said. "But this phased-in process can’t begin until we see sustained downward trends in many of the data elements that we talk about every day."
He said the data "we’re looking at includes several factors, such as positive test rates, hospitalization rates, and fatalities."
