Local COVID-19 updates
The state did not publish a COVID-19 Daily Dashboard on Christmas Day; thus today's numbers cover two calendar days of new reports. (Expect the same next week.)
As of 5PM today, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is reporting 46 newly reported confirmed deaths (30 less than Thursday - down 39.5%) for a total of 11,752 deaths, 7,424 newly reported confirmed cases (1,769 more than Thursday - up 31.3%) for a total of 335,731 cases, and 108,445 newly reported molecular tests (6,031 less than Thursday - down 5.3%). The seven day average positivity rate is 6.32%, compared to 5.76% Thursday. Excluding higher education, the seven day average positivity rate is 7.35%, compared to 7.02% Thursday. The number of estimated active cases was 78,086 (2,714 less than Thursday - down 3.4%). The state also reported 1 newly reported probable death (1 more than Thursday) for a total of 258 and 253 newly reported probable cases (29 less than Thursday - down 10.3%) for a total of 13,871. Combining the confirmed and probable numbers gives 47 new deaths for a total of 12,010 and 7,677 new cases for a total of 349,602. There were 2,077 COVID-19 patients in hospital (18 less than Thursday - down 0.9%), 416 COVID-19 patients in ICUs (7 more than Thursday - up 1.7%) and 232 COVID-19 patients on ventilators (intubated) (same as Thursday).
Of the Commonwealth's four "key metrics" listed on page 2 of the report, the 7-day average of newly confirmed cases is 2,888 (34 more than Thursday - up 1.2%), 1,739% above the lowest observed value of 157 on July 4 and 40% below the highest observed value of 4,778 on December 7. The 7-day weighted average of positive molecular test rate is 6.3% (0 more than Thursday - up 9.7%), 719% above the lowest observed value of 0.8% on September 21 and 77% below the highest observed value of 27.7% on April 15. The 7-day average number of COVID-19 patients in hospital is 2,035 (53 more than Thursday - up 2.7%), 1,212% above the lowest observed value of 155 on August 26 and 48% below the highest observed value of 3,874 on April 27. The 7-day average number of COVID-19 deaths is 44 (8 less than Thursday - down 15.4%), 300% above the lowest observed value of 11 on September 9 and 75% below the highest observed value of 175 on April 24.
Two weeks ago, the 7 day confirmed case average was 3,022, the 7 day confirmed deaths average was 45, the 7 day hospitalization average was 1,563, and the 7 day weighted average positivity rate was 5.6% (or 7.67% excluding higher education).
Deaths were down a bunch, which is sort of surprising given that this report covers two days; on the other hand, I can certainly imagine folks not wanting to report deaths on Christmas Day. The newly reported case count is the highest it's ever been, but again that's two days worth of data. Happier news are the drops in estimated active cases and hospitalizations; unhappier news are the rise in positivity and ICU cases.
The town of Acton's current Google Data Studio dashboard is showing 47 active and 495 cumulative cases as of December 24; apparently it hasn't been updated since. The most recent "newsflash style update" at 9PM on December 15 reported 433 cumulative cases with 63 individuals in isolation, 345 persons recovered and 25 fatalities.
